Push button overclocks

MSI's <a href="http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2186&page=1" target="_blank">NX8600GT has a button</a> on the back. PUSH BUTTAN GET MOAR FPS! I think it makes it too easy.

That's exactly what I was thinking of as soon as I saw the thread title. We had a turbo button on our 286 that OC'd it from 10MHz to 12MHz automagically!

I think I had a turbo button on my XT. I don't remember it actually doing anything. I don't think it was even attached to anything inside, other than the little LED.

I'm not sure I understand the point of this button. Why would you turn it off? Heat?

Unless it is somehow linked to fan speed, I don't see why anyone would turn it off :)

If they really wanted to make it more interesting/hardcore--they should have five settings: Low/Med/High/Artifacting/BSOD

Low/Med/High/Artifacting/BSOD Translated:

Low: no difference at all, but you'll have the feeling of becoming a real overclocker
Med: might actually make a difference in real game
High: will benefit you your in the game can actually actually take advantage of increased speed; helps you feel less like a fool for spending a fortune on a video card that will be yesterday's yawn in only three or four months
Artifacting: swear about the 'crappy' hardware, crappy Windows, incomplete game coding...anything but the fact that your sorry-a$$ off the shelf Dell/HP/e-Machines/whatever cramped case is so hot inside that it's a wonder the video card is working at all

I'm not sure I understand the point of this button. Why would you turn it off? Heat?A lot of software back in the day was designed around the 4MHz AT spec and didn't check to see how fast user events happened since all computers were the same speed. Having Turbo turned on would run your PC at its rated speed while turning it off would drop it to 4MHz (or at least its supposed to). For example, you would turn turbo off if you wanted to play Nibbles, Gorillas, or Scorched Earth at the intended speed and turn turbo on if you were really, really good at Nibbles.

Scorched earth was the best game ever until we discovered the Smart Guidance/Napalm exploit, then we had to house-rule it's use in the game, and as soon as you have to do that, the game is not as much fun.

For the record... I wiki'd Turbo button and found out that it's purpose was actually to under-clock your system (when off) for older games that relied on processor timing. The default position was "on".
