View Full Version : Constant PC fallover - bestfriends/aplore maybe?

Hi guys, hope I'm using this forum correctly - if not give me a slap and tell me what I'm doing wrong :)

I've had a huge problem with my PC - the thing freezes, and all screen output disapears every time I boot it up. Usually when I get to the desktop, but sometimes before.

I tracked it down to the internet connection - PC works for a while (but not always) without a connection, but falls over the instant I plug in the cable or switch on the router.

Found out I had a load of malware & spyware on the system and have cleaned most of it off. Problem persists.

I've downloaded:
AIMfix; CCleaner; Spybot - S&D; Spyware Terminator; SpywareBlaster; and Ad-Aware. Run them all both normally and in safe mode.

Spybot - S&D and Spyware Terminator seemed to clean out most of the spyware.

The Ad-Aware scan always hangs whent it gets to "Preparing GUID scanning" - which I believe is an issue with it not supporting my os: Vista x64

AIMfix said it found Bestfriend/Aplore, but doesn't remove them.

I can't see any of the files mentioned in previous bestfriends threads.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated :confused:

EDIT:
p.s.
as I can't get the thing online I'm unable to use any online scanners, or update the software. At the moment I'm useing my laptop to download software and transfering via a pendrive.
If anyones got a method of using the online scanners in similar way that might be helpful.

Hi Baggz! Apologies for the delay.

I'll need you to download a newer version of HijackThis, but first please remove the current version via Add/Remove programs.

Next, download HJTInstall.exe (http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe) to your Desktop.
Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Save the log to a convenient location as you'll need to post it soon.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi Baggz,

A few things:

1) The log looks rather strange. There are only 3 processes running?
2) I'm not familiar with Vista, so please bear with me.

I don't see anything malicious in the HijackThis log, so lets run a scan to get better info.

Please download ComboFix (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop. Double click on Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When the scan has finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
