Ok, I set up a vpn server using xp pro's built in service. I vnc'd into my mom's computer at home and tried to open that connection, but I kept getting an error saying that the server (my computer) wasn't responding.
Now I am on a dedicated fiber line behind a netgear router/firewall. I opened up the ports for pptp and other than that I don't know why it won't work.. I even found a site online that went through both how to do it step by step client and server. xp pro limits it to one active connection from my understanding, but that is all I need.
tip: i prefer openVPN, i was thinking of doing a guide for it.
made sure its forwarding the ports to the correct PC on your LAN, also PPTP needs the client to have forwarded/opened ports on their LAN

Ste will kill me for saying this, but would using LogMeIn (https://secure.logmein.com/products/free/) be easier to use? :-/ No messy setting up, but I suppose it will depend if you need the power of VNC - just an idea anyway

Sorry Kentigern, reposted with correct link (to free version that me and Ste use regularly in college )
Broady81, logmein ISNT a VPN,
(sort of webaccess but not)
Edit: a VPN wil give the client pc a IP from the servers network.

You need to make sure that your router(s) support(s) GRE. If either side doesn't, the VPN won't work.
If you forward TCP port 1723 to the PPTP server and allow GRE packets on both sides, everything should work. Search for "netgear GRE" in google. Seems like some models don't support it.
