setting up a little server from home

running a little server from home!

i'm going to build a little server machine to run a couple of sites from home! but before i go into this i would like some advice first

- now i'm going to use my current broadband for this service, currently its running at 4Mbps/2Mbps Down/Up respectively.. with a 10GB Limit/Mnth

- i'm planning of upgrading to 40GB/Mnth Limit which i assume should be enough to run these couple of small sites...

- would 2Mbps be enough? these are just information sites.. so nothing bandwidth killing really...

Yes, 2MB up is enough for text and a few small images. Any high res images will be slow loading and any downloads won't be blazing fast for anyone, especially if you get 10 - 15 people trying to download at once.

This site: www.dragoncc.biz (http://www.dragoncc.biz) is run on a linux machine at home with a 768kb up connection.

awesome... thanks for that... well the sites i've got won't have more than 10 people online at the same time, i'm sure of that...

just realise my ISP won't provide static IP for the package i'm in.. damn... that suck

Use one of the redirect sites.

I use Noip.com. They have a little proggie that I leave running on the server to update the redirect when my dynamic IP changes, then through the "fake" domain name I chose, I can always get home.

i'll look into those sites... doesn't it take a while to actually get the ip addy propagated?

The utility hits their DNS (noip's) every 15 min, once that is done... it works.

So, if I bounced my router right now and the utility had just updated 1 min before that. In 14 mins, I could remote back home from wherever I am.

It seems to take almost no time to "spread" around the internet, but I am sure it does actually take X amount of time, but I have not run into that situation.
