Welcome to Icrontic and posting your question about Folding. My fellow team mates have given you all the links to help you understand what folding is. The short answer...

Fold@Home is a distributed computing project that uses personal computers to assist Stanford with very complex research. The hope is find the source of Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers.

It's a very addictive endeavor for many of us. :D
