View Full Version : Strange Beep?

My computer has been emitting a strange beep every so often (about once a day) for about 6 months now...just one solid beep. Then.....Nothing. Odd? I thought so too and the more I think about it, the more I think it might be a hardware issue.
Any idea on what it might be?

When does it do it?
Mr TRiot

usually at night...when the fans run for like 10 secs at full...
It's been random as of late though and I haven't seen any concequences while i've been on it...
edit: random, meaning completely quiet computer...and it'll beep.

I just heard it again.... It's a mix between a beep code and almost like an electrical snap/grind...:-/

That is messed up. Is there any possible way for you to record the sound?

uhhhh.....I can try? I highly doubt i'll be able to get it though...
I've been thinking for awhile it's my HD (considering ever since this started my torrents have been DLing at absolutely terrible levels [~5kb/sec]...which is why I'm here lol). Is there anyway to check? /me doesn't want to loose 160 Gigs of ish
edit: Although...If I could find a list of beep codes. I could prob tell you if what I'm hear is a beep code or something else :S

If it sounds like a grinding, it's either a fan or a hard drive. Position your head near the case idly and when you hear it, just tell us which part it came from.

The fan is working fine...BUT!
I just turned EVERY background noise off..and I hear a slight clicking. It's constant and EXTREMELY quiet....

Check to see if you have any wires obstructing your fans. If not, you may be losing a very good buddy of yours.

Great...I'm pretty sure my warenty just expired too :-/
And as far as the wires go. They barely make it to the fans as it is, so it's almost impossible for them to get entangled with it
So....what exactly is wrong with my CPU? (The HP site said one solid beep code is the processor :-/)

I had a problem like this before, take it out of the zip, clean the bar that holds in in the zip, and SECURELY secure the cpu in the zip and see if it works...

Alright will do that after i'm done running some tests...
(Motherboard test, passed. Harddrive quick SMART test, passed. Doing the extended SMART test now)

yeah, when i reassembled my computer i had peeps accomanied by fan trouble and upon inspection, realized by cpu was improperly seated (it fell out when i turned the box vertical o_0)
what causes it, i dont know....but i would like to

It's worth a shot. My CPU is like never moved though...I got a fancy computer desk with a spot specifically designed for the tower.
p.s. When I turned on my computer. It made the "beep" twice...once at the "welcome" screen and once when it got to the desktop (about 30 seconds apart) :-/

Without knowing what this beep sound sounds like, we're all shooting in the dark. You need to be more specific: Where is it coming from? What does it sound like? "Beep" isn't very descriptive. How loud is it? Does it sound like the beep at POST?
etc.
Mr TRiot

it's about 2 or octaves lower then the "welcome to vista" beep. And yes, it does sound like a POST beep but more electrified.
p.s. I ran EVERY single test in "Hardware Diagnostic" and everything passed :(

PC speaker might have a short in it..?

There brand new speakers....got 'em for christmas.
My old ones were blown though if that makes a difference.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the internal speaker. On many modern motherboards, this is essentially a piezoelectric buzzer on the motherboard. That's what produces the POST beeps.

GH beat me to it. Dammitstacks.

...Any way to test it ?
disconnect the internal speaker from the MoBo, and see if it continues.

You may not be able to. If it's a modern motherboard it has a piezoelectric speaker which will be soldered on to the board.

grab the putty knife, take it off, and go on without it? would it work?
I guess I haven't really paid attention to the system speakers in awile. :O

Yeah it'd work but it'd void the warranty on the machine if it's an OEM, or the motherboard itself if it's not.

It'd be fun to remove it in either case.

Is this causing any problems, other than making a beep or whatever? Are you experiencing any crashes or stuff?

Other then a reallllllly slow start up time....not really :-/

Then it sounds like you have a failing hard drive as I said from the beginning. Might wanna go pick up a new one.
