When I was a young man, I thought it was a shame when the salsa (or other dip) ran out before the chips, as it left nothing to place on the chips. If the chips ran out before the salsa, it was a job well done.

As an adult I've realized that my feelings on this have changed. I now feel it a shame when the chips run out before the salsa, as there is no longer a vehicle for transportation of the salsa from the bowl to my face. If the salsa runs out before the chips, it is a job well done.

I wonder if this is a matter of maturity. Perhaps it has something to do with the relative quality of the salsa I was purchasing then versus now. Maybe it's simply one of those unexplainable changes in personal preference that we sometimes experience.

Thoughts?

There is a simple solution to your dilemma:

Spoon

or just **** it. Bowl directly to face.

The dilemma is not how to get the rest of the salsa out of the bowl. The dilemma is why would this emotional tie to one food over the other change so dramatically between my childhood and adulthood.

I guess it's not really a 'dilemma' so much as a musing, but dilemma made a better thread title. Which would have been even better if I'd spelled it correctly.

I hate when the dip runs out first, because I can still eat the chips.

I tend to eat my food. I'm not big on building strong emotional bonds with it. Maybe next time I have nachos, we'll try a trust fall or something.

If I don't think there is enough chips or dip/salsa, I just eat something else. If I didn't have another choice, running out of dip/salsa before chips would be more acceptable.

Time for the bullet points!

I hate it when the chips run out
I hate it when the dip runs out
I hate it when I am unable to finish off the chips or the dip becuase I have filled myself.Sadly, there is never a happy ending for any kind of chips and dip. This is fact, just enjoy it while it lasts.

what you have to do is measure the wight of the chips in grams and then see how much a single chip would hold and then put EXACTLY that much slasa for that amount of chips in the bowl and hide it from Brian. =p

During any future LAN parties at Casa De Primo please make sure the dip bowl doesn't have "Snuffie" written on it........

I voted salsa first. At least you can finish of the chips if the salsa is gone. I don't think I've ever seen anyone eat straight salsa before. Chips on the other hand....

I voted both because with tortilla chips (i'm assuming as per thread title that they are tortilla chips) my taste buds have become quite accustomed. Almost too accustomed. So to eat them without salsa/dip/guacsalsa/jesus juice (pronounced heysus huse) I feel as though the chip itself has wasted its being upon me. I find little satisfaction with it due to years of eating plain tortilla chips has "desensitized" me to their flavor.

On the flip side eating salsa by itself conjures up the same issues. Salsa by itself might be palatable and even healthy. But I can help but feel wasted potential from slurping up the last of the salsa in the bowl without the convenient partner in crime, the chip.

I am too lazy to try and rationalize a perfect chip to salsa ratio and thus am usually disappointed towards the end of snacking time. But those times when it works out perfectly...man those times are sweet!

The chip clip is a wonderful invention. It allows me to open a bag of chips, dump as much salsa as I want into a bowl, eat until the salsa is gone, then put the chips back in the cabinet.

Truly, the chip clip decreases those nagging feelings of disappointment when snacking inequality rears its ugly head.

I've been conducting this discussion around the consideration that we are assuming "flat" tortilla chips.

Lately I've been more into the "bowl" or "scoop" style - chips designed to hold maximum salsa. Where does this leave us. You can scoop the bowl clean with some of these chips.....

Scoop chips definately increase the salsa/dip to chip ratio. I like the fact the scoop shape reduces the chance of catastrophic chip failure, which can result in the dreaded digit contamination of bowl contents... EWWWW

Scoop style corn chips with french onion dip = yummy. My wife doesn't like the scoops because the chips are thicker/harder than regular corn chips.
