<a href="http://gizmodo.com/347985/mpaa-did-we-say-44-of-piracy-was-done-by-students-we-meant-15-our-bad">Gizmodo</a> reports that the MPAA has been claiming that a massive 44% of all illegal movie downloading was done by college students. However, their statistic is a little off. It turns out that college students are really only responsible for 15% of illegal movie activity.

In response to their "small" error, the MPAA responded:
"We take this error very seriously and have taken strong and immediate action to both investigate the root cause of this problem as well as substantiate the accuracy of the latest report.

Let's say the average illegal downloader starts in 6th grade, or as a 13-year-old. Let's also say that they probably will stop when they're 30-35, since it becomes more of a hassle to deal with bad downloads and they can afford to get it legitimately vs. wasting their valuable time.

So... 13 to 35 is 22 years. On average, 5 of which are done in college. So college is about 22% of your file sharing years, with 1 year = about 4.5%.

If we assume population growth = 0, 15% is actually great news, since it means that of the 22% of the file sharers in population, only 15% choose to participate.


note: I did the longer lifespan estimate, assumed a 25% longer suration in college for all college students, and made population growth = 0. These are all things that work AGAINST me in this argument. If I were fair to myself (4 year college term, proper population growth/curve indexed with all computer users in population) the case would be even STRONGER that the RIAA is full of ****.
