In what is perhaps a stunning departure from the tack these two firms take on rights and privacy, Verizon and AT&T both claim they do not store SMS records. At most, your SMS messages stay on central servers for up to 72 hours for delivery purposes, and then are deleted by your carrier.

It's comforting news in an increasingly-public era, but we question its voracity. We suppose only time will tell if this is truthful or not, and we're sure it will hit the courts one of these days.

Why would they need to track it longer?
