View Full Version : Another tragic ipod story.

Well, over the weekend my iPod died :(. I had it plugged into my 360 playing music and so it could charge. Anyway I left it plugged in so it could charge and went out for a few hours. When I came back I noticed that the charging symbol (with the animation of the battery being "filled" up) was frozen. I unplugged it and pressed buttons but nothing happened. I reset it and it never turned back on. I plugged headphones in and nothing plays, and I cant hear the hard drive spinning up so I'm almost positive that it's dead and not just a broken screen or something like that. I have the receipt at home, but I'm almost positive the warrenty is expired.

if anyone has suggestions on what to do (that doesn't involve spending money), please list them. thanks

Have you tried a restore through iTunes?

nothing even happens when I plug it into my computer or 360.

I did have a replacement plan/warrenty that went in effect on 10/18/05 but I'm not sure if it's a 2 or 3 year plan through bestbuy.

edit - AWESOME NEWS! I just called my brother so he could check my receipt and I have the 3 year plan so it still covered! Now thrax, you can help me on this one since you're a bestbuy employee(or used to be). Will they try and fix it, or just give me a refurbished one? Also since mine is the ipod photo which they discontinued forever ago, if they do replace it will I get one of the newer models?

Used to be.

It depends on the model and your warranty. If it says "PRP" on your receipt, you'll receive a model of a similar price and features off the shelf. If it says "PSP" on your receipt, they'll try to fix it unless you request a rapid exchange, and then you'll receive factory-refurbished.

It says "PSP". If I were to request a rapid exchange would I get another refurbished ipod photo even though they don't make them anymore? I'm pretty sure they made them for less than a year and then made the ipod videos.

What if they try to fix it and they can't?

No, you will not get a photo. You'll receive a model comparable in price and features.

If they can't fix it, you go into the store to get a model comparable in price and features.

Try plugging it into a wall charger with the USB cable and hitting the reset button.

Tried it, nothing happened. Looks like I'll have to send it home tomorrow and have someone take it to bestbuy for me.

Nothing happens at all. Nothing appears on the screen, and the hard drive isn't spinning. Who knows whats wrong with it, but I'm just glad it's still under warrenty.

I don't know about Best Buy, since I got my CrapPod straight from apple, but when mine broke, Apple just gave me a new one. I don't think they fix them very often.

You wouldn't either when they cost, what, like ~$60 to produce?;)

I've heard a SpinRight CD can fix dead iPod HD's but if the machine doesn't recognize it...

Nothing recognizes it because its dead. The thing doesn't turn on, so theres no way anything will eve be able to read it. The hard drives don't spin, and you can't hear anything at all. When plugged into a computer or xbox nothing happens. I doubt the cd will fix anything.

Some good news i guess? My ipod turns on now but immediately displays text saying "Your battery is low. Please plug in immediately" or something along the lines of that. So when I plug it into a wall charger it just goes through a loop of resetting and then displaying that text. When I plug it into the computer it just shows the animation of the battery charging, but it freezes and only shows the first bar at all times and its in black and white (has a color screen)

It needs to be returned to the factory. I dealt with an iPod like this at work about a month ago, there is no way to remove it from that cycle, and the special menus yield no helpful information to alleviate the problem. You can try restoring it all you want, but it won't fix the problem.

If you could narrow it down somehow, or get a geniusbar guy to tell you exactly what you need, ifixit.com should be able to help you out.

It's still under warrenty so I'm not too concerned about fixing it myself. I have a 2G nano that I'm using for now so I'm not in a huge rush either.
