At least one analyst thinks it makes good sense for NVIDIA to buy AMD (http://www.neowin.net/news/main/08/02/15/analyst-expects-nvidia-to-acquire-amd).

There's no way regulators would let that happen. That would create a monopoly in the 3d graphics hardware market.

...but only if said regulators have more that a modicum of knowledge of the PC industry. They might not even realize the outcome by saying yes to such a deal...

I don't count "ignorance of the PC industry" as a scapegoat to creating the world's ONLY discreet 3D hardware manufacturer. Regulators would be educated very quickly.

AFAIK, a monopoly is not illegal unless the commodity is a necessity. You can monopoly luxury goods as much as you want, mirite?
Intel has the biggest graphics division in the world, and is about to enter the 3D space.
Is it still a monopoly?

Yep, check the market share in the video world. Intel owns all. As for you and me, it would seem like a monopoly though.

If such a merger would be proposed, the feds would make sure that one vid card division or the other would be sold off before merger approval would be given. I've seen much the same thing happen numerous times in the various mergers that have taken place between companies in the oilfield industry. Believe it or not, they probably have at least 1 or 2 of those government bureaucrats that are actually competent enough to know what's happening. ;)
