Well the rumors were true. Toshiba killed it this morning.
They released this press release http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/ir/en/news/20080219_03.htm

Are you serious? I mean, I can't tell if your joking or not, but from the technical specs I saw on engadget, Blu-ray seems to be superior. If you're serious, could you explain to me why HD DVD was superior?

HD-DVD's minimum standard of audio and video quality (The codecs used to encode them) were higher than on Blu-Ray. Disk capacity was a non-issue with tri-layer HD-DVDs at no additional cost, and the HD-DVD standard -- at no time -- has ever or would ever break playback of discs like Blu-Ray has and will do.

He's referring to BD players needing firmware upgradability to keep up with BR standards. The ONLY BD player with this feature is the PS3. Newer BR standards will make playback of new discs in older (current) players an impossibility.

I sure thank all who steered me away from the fiasco! It was only a few weeks ago that I was considering getting a new player. If I had got one, I would have returned it all for a refund by now! ;)

I may wait yet for a still more efficient Cell processor version (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080207-ibm-shrinks-cell-to-45nm-cheaper-ps3s-will-follow.html)- not because of a possible cut in PS3 price but because of the 40% power savings. Then there is a double bene for me because it also reduces thermal dissipation which goes easier on my summer cooling bills.

Talk about how Toshiba has surrendered to the enemy! (http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Details.aspx?NewsId=22533)
