Want DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD audio on your PC? You'll have to wait (http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1306/dts_hd_and_dolby_truehd_on_your_pc/index.html).

they talk about HDMI sound cards, but what about HDMI video cards that output audio also?

Does anybody make any? Seems to me like I'd rather have a graphics card handling the graphics and a sound card handling the sound, but maybe that's just my old-fashionededness kicking in.

So, I thought to myself, "What is high definition audio?" I looked it up and discovered that I have it on three of my computers, rendered through the Azalia (http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/265) audio chips on my Abit and Gigabyte motherboards. I'm so happy I don't know what to do.

Silly me, sitting on this incredible revolution, the whole time thinking the sound reproduced from my relatively new motherboards was merely an incremental improvement over the previous standard.

OK, to be fair, I suppose I would need high quality speakers to take advantage of the HDMI standard.

... you'd also need HDMI out. The Azalia chips are great, and make my Z5500s sound mighty nice even though they're nowhere near audiophile standards, but that's exactly what the article's talking about. You can't get the real HD audio out without HDMI.

Maybe when the "HD" PC audio tech matures some more, there will be a home theater PC in my future.

The difference between DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD compared to the 5.1, Dolby Digital, THX, DTS etc is enormous. There is actually more difference to the sound than the picture from DVD to Full HD.

... nice even though they're nowhere near audiophile standards,
That's my problem right there, neither are my ears.

Asus is coming out with an HDMI-equpped (http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/28/asus-shows-off-hdmi-equipped-xonar-dx-and-xonar-av1-sound-cards/) sound card soon as well, the Xonar series.
