View Full Version : ti-89
I just got a ti-89 calculator and it's amazing. Not sure how I made it a year and a half in engineering without it. This makes me pissed off about all the calculus classes I took, since I can solve a problem that would usually take up like half a page of paper with the press of like 10 buttons. This thing is amazing. Can't wait for physics next quarter ;)

Don't rely on it too heavily. Most schools won't let you use them on quizzes/exams. You need to understand the concepts before you start to use the calculator anyway. :)

I know the concepts pretty well. It's just awesome that it can cut down my homework time a good bit.

I love my ti-89. But listen to cyclonite. I went through highschool algebra, geometry and pre-cal using this calculator, it was cake. I took calculus and the teacher wouldn't let you use one. Man I got reamed pretty hard that first quarter. So don't rely on it too much.
Also, watch out for those super strict teachers that make you erase your memory before takings tests (if you store notes in your ti-89).

calculators are useless on well-written exams anyway. :)

I didnt get it for cheating on exams!
I bought it mainly so homework wouldn't take as long, and also for checking my work. The only class I cant use it in is calculus, which is pretty obvious why.

Yep. TI-89s rock. I love mine.

Sorry, didn't mean to be entirely negative. I got a TI-89 when I first entered my degree program, and I loved the thing.

Dang you guys had some rough profs. Any time I've had a new concept in calc of course we had to show all of our work on paper but once we got past the theory we were allowed to use the calc when the math was needed for another topic. But yeah it is like a god though. Too bad I forgot how to use most of it already haha.
We can use them for physics, and my engineering classes. No way for calculus because, well, I shouldn't even have to explain.

I'm a little old fashioned and tend to use 'Start > All Programs > Accessories > Calculator' ;) OR just lazy!

I got mine in HS for cheating on exams.
And playing battleship.
But it is where I learned to code! PRINT i am cool GOTO Start

yea but that wont solve a partial fraction for you haha

lulz. I have a TI-89 Emulator on my computer. It's pretty spiffy. I also have a TI-89 and a TI- Plus SE that I had to buy for the ACT since the 89 was disallowed.

I wouldn't know how to use one anyway!!! I suck with maths!

This thing is amazing. I keep on finding more features. It cut down my homework time today a good amount too!
before I get some more "you should know the conects before you use it," believe me. I'm very familiar with everything that I use. Its just convenient that instead of writing something out I can press a couple of buttons and get the same result in a fraction of the time.

Does the ACT really require the use of such a beast? I recall using a $10 Casio that did me well! The ACT doesn't have much more advanced stuff than that, and neither does the SAT.
No, he's saying that he wasn't allowed to use the 89 on the ACT, so he bought a Plus SE to use for it.

I first used a TI-89 in my senior year of high school. I was not allowed to use it in calculus but my physics teacher required it for his class. People that couldn't afford one were issued school loaners.
If you decide to go into engineering in college you will need one; my multivariable calculus class had the TI-89 listed as required course material. The professor for that class wrote a custom OS for the TI-89 that makes multivariable calculus and linear algebra problems a snap.
I second what Cyclonite and rolleggroll said: don't become reliant on it. You will have exams where calculators aren't allowed or like shwaip said encounter situations where if you study a little more you won't need it. I have had exams where calculators were allowed but not required. The students without calculators have an advantage on those exams. If they make an error and their numbers become too ridiculous to solve by hand they know they've made an error and go back; if I make an error I can soldier on because my calculator can deal with ridiculous numbers. My professors are also especially fond of designing tests such that punching whole problems into the TI-89 takes much longer than a mental solution using a few basic principles. Students that made extensive use of the calculator don't finish. I typically see this sort of sneaky behavior in math classes and engineering classes with math theory elements.

Drasnor, I'm not sure if that was adressed to me or just anyone reading this, but I am in college for engineering (sophomore year ISE major). I finally got a ti-89 because my classes up until now didn't have a lot of calculus so I could get by with a ti-83. My ti-83 died in chem lab last quarter after I believe it was phosphoric acid, was spilled all over it. Only 1/4 of the screen works now, and it likes to turn off every 5 seconds. I figured I might as well spend the extra for an 89 since I needed a new calculator anyway and I must say, it really makes my physics and calc homework faster. I know how to do all of the concepts that we do by hand, so I'm not hurting myself by using it in any way.

I still dont know why a ti 89 cant be used in a calc class if you have to show all your work.
I had a ti 86 in HS and they later required the ti 83+ for the class 2 years behind me (my sisters class). Of course I had to get a new ti89 1st sem in college.
The best part about all these calcs are the games on any of the upper ti's. :D

Theres no point in even using it if you show your work. The only thing you could do is verify your work, which would make it easier to get a correct answer....or you could just BS and write some stuff down, and depending on the professor you could get a good amount of partial credit

I remember one of my friends in HS had the Ti-92... That thing was awesome!!
