View Full Version : 8800 GT OC the best bang for the buck right now?
This card $220 card:
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16814127329
seems to be scoring as well or better than many cards that are still selling for $400-$600
http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=853&model2=1057&chart=298
Am I reading something wrong or is this a real sweet spot in the video card market right now?

True, 8800gt 512 is the best price to performance card out right now. Two in sli compete with 8800gtx and 9800 for a fraction of the price. I have a single evga 8800gt and it runs TF2 and WoW beautifully at 1920x1200 with high settings.

umm my 9600GT rocks out pretty nice at 189

The 8800gt still fairly significantly outperforms the 9600 and for only 10 dollars more.

There's a difference in the GPUs afaik, the 9600GT uses G94, but the 640 GTS doesn't perform as well as the 512.

8800GTS 512 > 8800GT > 9600GT > 8800GTS 640.
Also, the 9600GT is now $139 w/ MIR.

the #600 version of the next generation is always worse than the previous generation's #800

No love for ATi? I recently grabbed a HD3870 and it's keeping up with the Jones's just fine. Prices are falling on them too, now $175 -ish for new. The difference between an 8800GT and a HD3870 isn't great enough to spend 10-20% more money if you're trying to buy a mid-range card (which is usually an equation of 'best bang for buck', which I think the 3870 and 8800GT are neck and neck).

All 9600GT are G94.

wow, it's been a long time since I've been to these boards. I've been out of the tech scene for quite a while, so please excuse the noobie question, but if I get a 8800GT or GTS 512MB, will it run on my old MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum? It's got a PCI-E x16 v.1.0a slot, and I've heard PCI-E 2.0 is backwards compatible. so good idea/bad idea? thanks guys!

It will work AND it won't be any slower. No video card I know of even uses all of a single PCIe 1.0 slot's bandwidth anyway.
Think of it like this - 3-4 years ago gigabit NIC cards were being included with home computers, but 1% of the home PC market had gigabit routers. STILL most home routers are 10/100. PCIe 2.0 is a nice idea, but nothing in today's hardware market uses it for its intended purpose, and there's a chance 3.0 will be out before 2.0's specs are even fully utilized.

sweet, that's exactly what I Was looking for. I wasn't sure if the PCIe 2.0 made a huge difference in its performance. thanks!

I'm running a pair of OC'ed 8800GTs (one EVGA KO Edition and an XFX Alpha Dog) on 2x16 PCI Express 1.something and it works quite well. You shouldn't see any problems

I dont like Overclocking, it just makes your GPU make more heat and also lessens it's life. when im buying GPU im looking for the ones that are OC by the factory. the ones that EVGA produce, they are good in max clocking. And also, MONSTER GPUs are now just few bucks :D not like b4.. >__<

You don't like overclocking but you buy overclocked cards? That produces the same result... Whether you overclock it or the manufacturer overclocks it is irrelevant, anything that's overclocked will be hotter- If you're into overclocking you go out and buy extra cooling anyway, so it evens out.

jeez, this 8800 GTS 512MB is a huge card. it barely fit into the socket because of the SATA sockets on the board. so when I tried to put it into the PCIe slot, it was low enough to the board and long enough to interfere with my SATA cables to the board. just something to keep in mind as my vid card is the length of the mobo...

yes, but atleast they know what they are doing with their products XD.. and i am really confused with somthing, WHAT THE HELL IS THE DIFFERENCE OF GS FROM GT?? i have been up on computer assembly but since b4 i really dont know what is their difference >_< for prices, i recommend www.tigerdirect.com (http://www.tigerdirect.com) lotsa selections of mobo, gpu, cpu, etc.
The GS is slower than the GT. :)
