View Full Version : cpu choices?
I was looking at those durons they have been talking about in forums 2.3 is awesome from a 1.4 cpu. I was wondering have they locked durons yet? I was thinking of buying one for my new folding rig if i can get enough cash. Also wheres the cheapest place, still newegg?

AnandTech just did a write-up on the Durons and Celerons (and included Athlon XP's that are $100 or below (which goes all the way up to the 2600+)). The Celerons (which went all the way to 2.6GHz) got the smack layed down on them. The only Duron shown was the 1.6GHz, but the Athlon XPs all the way up to nearly 2.1GHz were represented and it showed just how crippled a CPU the Celerons are and how miserable a CPU the 400MHz FSB p4s are (a 1.8GHz p4 was included).
// Edit. Woops. I said "Durons" when I meant "Celerons." Change made in bold.

ExcaliberPC had Barton 2500+'s for sale at $88. Not bad, since their normal is $93, which is still cheap for something capable of 2.2ghz (I think? :) )

Honestly, I'd go to www.excaliberpc.com and pick up the 1800+ they have marked specifically as a JIUHB/DLT3C chip. Mine (from Fry's, not Excaliber) does 2.51GHz on air.
i have a barton 2500+ @ 2.2GHz but i was looking for a folding machine and didnt wanna spend too much (since im broke)

The XP17, 18 or 19 will give you the biggest bang for the buck. And not many bucks. There are still 17's listed on pricewatch, but I have not dealt with any of the guys selling them.

What's your budget?
I think most (perhaps all?) recent 1800+s are DLT3C which should come very close to (or exceed) 2.3GHz
Since the multiplier is 11.5, it's perfect for a 200MHz FSB.
If the 1800+ is too pricey for you then I'd hold off for a while to save some--obviously much needed--cash.
Duron 1.4 $36
Duron 1.6 $42
AXP1800+ $52
All CPUs are OEM so you'll need an HSF. I think www.svc.com has fair pricing (and importantly shipping pricing when you're purchasing such inexpensive items) for HSFs.
i was trying to spend a small amount cash

I'd get the 1800+ for the folding rig. My Palamino ran at 1.6ghz on almost-stock cooling (CoolerMaster fan, which is NOT stock cooling for AMD CPUs) and did WU's pretty well. Idle temp. was about 35C and full load temp. was about 40C.

SVC has an HSF combo for $1.99!!!!
Now, just buy a better fan for it ($10 range) and I'm sure it can handle 2GHz . . . maybe even the 2.3 I'd shoot for depending on ambient temps. $2 + $10 + S&H ($5 maybe?). That's $17 for a decent HSF.
are the new 1800+ locked at newegg? also does anyone have a 1800+ for sale?
