ubuntu.comA new version of Ubuntu was released today. Version 8.04 is a long term support (LTS) release, and will be officially supported until at least 2011 for the desktop version. Among its features is a new version of X.Org Server that should improve multi-monitor support, and a snazzy new wallpaper. How's that for an "ultimate extra?"

Download 32 or 64-bit versions of the desktop or server versions here (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download).

And don't forget the wubi installer (http://wubi-installer.org/) if you'd like Ubuntu installed in its own directory and added to the Windows bootloader. It can install without having to burn the iso to a CD, and you can uninstall from the Windows add/remove program manager.

Wubi will be especially nice on my laptop that Dell used a really funky partitioning scheme on. I've been using the Live CD of Gutsy, and it's going to be oh-so-nice not to have to apt-get every time I load :D

I did, in fact, forget the wubi installer. Thanks for the reminder!

 I'm afraid I'm not familiar with what this is- can you explain or buzz me a link?- we have a Dell LT in the family.

Regardless- intriguing ... definitely intriguing

The screencap below is from the disk management console on my Inspiron 1520. I'm just not sure what's up with those two non-mounted partitions. I think one may be for the Dell Media Center thing that it can boot into. Come to think of it, I'm not sure what's on the recovery partition, either. Seems to just be the OS install with no periodic updates of my profile. Lame - they should have just given me a DVD for that.

The 86mb partition is the Dell diagnostics, and the 2.5GB partition is a repository for the recovery partition. Miscellaneous files and software.

Upgraded for the past couple days now, upgrade went smooth and left it running over night as I was getting a slow download. Nothing broke, overall it just looks better with some new animations and events.
