I tried copying some files from CD to hard drive and received a cyclic redundancy error message

It means that the CD is corrupt, or the section of hard drive you're copying to is corrupt. You get a CRC (Cyclical Redundancy check) error when the data is unreadable. Try copying another CD to the hard drive; if the error persists, your hard drive needs to be replaced ASAP. If it doesn't, your CD is bad.

Thrax, if he rules out CDs as causing the error, would it be worth a shot to try a fix with Checkdisk, or does the cyclic redundancy error message indicate a permanent hardware problem?
Generally permanent, but worth a shot.

I've also run into the problem in the midst of burning a cd, and the fault was with the burner. The drive had gone bad.
