Hi,

I was looking to set up a LAN with my friend on sunday at his house.

how simple is it? I use hamachi alot for games of cnc3 with him but it can be laggy.

Im going round his house so i thought ide take my pc with me for a bit of lag free gaming.

Is it just simple as connecting the 2 computers together with a ethernet cable and then going into network and it will work?
Or is there lots of settings etc that i need to configure?:confused:

Thanks.:)

You could do network cable and a hub, or you could just use a crossover cable. Me and a buddy used to do this a while back. I don't really remember the settings part, but it was real simple.

With the network cable and hub depending on your setup (or his).. If he has a modem (ethernet not USB) he can plug the cable (straight cable) into the hub and then plug 2 more cables into his and your PC and it should connect pretty much straight away.

Crossover can be connected directly (as you probably know) and as far as I can think all you need to do is ensure your IP addresses don't conflct and MAYBE ensure you are both on the same workgroup (Default is WORKGROUP). -- Crossover cables over in UK are about £5 so maybe $10 over there? no doubt can get them from any electrical store (MAPLIN is one over here, not sure if you have them)

Yep, im in the uk so i do have maplins just down the road.

So basically i just plug his pc into the modem and my pc into the modem and it will work?

Ohh, ive just been on the maplins website and found this. cheap enough an looks like the right thing

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=47616&&source=14&doy=search

so i just plug one end in my pc and the other in his?

Yeah that should basically do it.. I've done it with a crossover cable with a friend when we were using 2 PC's on 56k!!!!!

You may have to set static IP's mind but it aint hard to do :)
