this (http://www.microcool.it/index1.asp?ris=1024&lin=in) looks to be one hell of a northbridge cooler ...anyone have any experiences with it? also comes with mofset sinks. very pricey at about $32.95 @ sidewinder

Spend $6 on a cheap 50x50mm Coolermaster S7/370/A HSF (DP5-5G11A, I believe) and use that.
90 percent of the reason I dump the stock NB heatsinks is the noise of those sorry little fans and not for other super cooling reasons.
Would be curious how noisy that NB cooler is.

27.5 dB(A) according to the website.
It's probably a high pitch noise though.
That uhhhh. "DENTIST DRILL" noise that has the uncanny ability to pierce ones frontal lobe?

How come a copper HSF is $16.13 (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?sid=3FD66200185617F&product_code=50254543), but a much smaller version for a NB is $32? WTF :banghead:
I wonder what the FSB difference is between Geeky's HSF vs. a copper one like the 2 in FatCat's post. I bet not worth the $28 :ninja:
I used to just cut up huge old xeon heatsinks meant to be passivley cooled with no fans. The fins are huge. And attaching it with arctic silver epoxy. But due to MB warranty concerns I am switching to real NB coolers... But I aint gonna pay 30 bucks for one either.

Hey Tex, you may find this thread helpful:

Using one or the other of those mounting methods, you should be able to mount just about any heatsink that'll fit onto a chip, without voiding the board's warranty.

Tex if it isn't noisey enough for you you can add this (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/delfub.html) for another $13.95 with 41.9db!
your not following me here. I pull the fans off. And leave them off.
I'm going the no-noise route.

I was being facetious ...I like my zalman zmnb47j
I have been tempted to get a zalman in the past. If I could find something else that was even bigger for me to rip the fan off of though I am always open to new idesa... Just not at 30 bucks a pop for a NB cooler.

I can tell you straight away that a waterblock on the north didn't gain me a single one. Then again, my north is lapped....
You can spend a milion on a NB cooler, it's still going to be as concave as a banana moon on the wrong side of the equator.

leonardo used to have a real nice cheap huge chunky passive nbsink ...give him a shout and he can point you in the right direction. I think it was under $10

Pick up a big surplus heatsink and modify it according to the guide I posted a link to earlier. It'll cost you <$10, and be totally silent.

csimon, as I recall, Leonardo got the idea from me... I may be wrong though...

Looks good but the pc will freeze above 1.6V on the north and 220+ fsb. Cheap though. I have tried passive on the north and it's a nogo on an overclock.

csimon... the zalman is passable at best. I've had one; it couldn't comfortably handle the 10w dissipation from a 760mpx without active cooling.

the only thing making mine worthwhile is the fact that I have the tornado sucking cooler air right through it from the slk ...but you're right it doesn't help the oc much at all.
And I don't do it to OC. I change them just to silence the whiny little high rpm fans on the stock NB coolers.

If it was still available, I'd sell it to ya. But I glued it onto my Rage 128 in place of the stock heatsink... :(
