Last week If Magazine spoke with producer Erwin Stoff about his upcoming projects, one of them a live action version of the popular Cowboy Bebop series:

“I’m developing COWBOY BEBOP for Fox, but doing it as a live-action film, so I’m working on that at the moment,” Stoff tells iF. “I’m really excited to be working on it, and it’s in the really early stages. We just signed it the other day.”

“I have such an enormous admiration for its creators, that our first and foremost concern is going to be a real degree of faithfulness to the tone of the movie, to the mix of genres, and so on and so forth,” he says. “When I met with them in Japan, one of the first things that I brought up was the experience that we had on A SCANNER DARKLY, and how hard we worked to remain faithful to Philip K. Dick, and that was our big concern here.”

First Showing (http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/07/30/rumor-keanu-reeves-as-spike-in-cowboy-bebop-movie/) has news that Keanu is rumored to be involved with the project:

Just last week we discovered [actually, it would be iF magazine that discovered it, but whatever -ed.] that Fox is developing a live-action Cowboy Bebop movie based on the popular anime series. Remarkably, the project still isn't officially announced and Fox is still keeping it under wraps. However, a good friend inside the industry who is a very reliable source wrote in to tell me that the film is being fast tracked inside the studio and will most likely be out by 2010. He also revealed that Keanu Reeves has been attached as the lead character Spike for over eight months now and is still set for the role. Unfortunately there isn't a writer or director attached yet, but with some new forward momentum coming from last week's announcement, I don't think it will take too long.

Consider it all rumor for now but it's an interesting choice for the lead role.

One rumor that would be interesting if true.

I love Cowboy Bebop with all of my body, including my pee-pee. That said, I don't know if Reeves could do Spike. I think he'd miss that dark underlying layer Spike has.

I wanna know who they'd cast for Faye? And Ed, Ein, and Jet.

have no idea who the help Cowboy Bebop is...

....Is he/it one of those Anime cartoons where everyone has really odd looking hair, and talks WAY too much?

Cowboy Bebop is a classic anime series, it's what got me into Anime and I'll still pop it in every now and then and watch it from beginning to end in one sitting :P

I think Keanu could do spike, he has the potential, my only worry is will he perform the spike we know. Can and doing are of course two different things. That said, I also would love to know who will portray Faye Valentine and Jack Black. I guess I am also curious about Ed as that will probably be the hardest role to fill without breaking the wacky Ed we know of as a live action role.

One more thing, I think Spikes english voice is pivitol to the "Spike" character... that I am unsure if Keanu can pull off. The voice actor has done many roles and his voice is fantastic :P

This news makes me happy and sad all at the same time. Happy because of the possibility of a live-action Bebop movie. Sad because of Keanu.

I love cartoons\comics, but could never get into anime..

Story lines are way too convoluted, can't keep up with it.. You miss 10 minutes of DragonBall Z and tell me this isn't true.....

Drives me freakin' nuts when a character must explain in minute detail every trangression (including visuals) another character did to him/her, their father, grandfather, dog, and pet goldfish....

By the time they finish explaining everything, I'm already on another channel.

Like the American super hero cartoons (Batman, Super Man, etc) - "Little less talk, a lot more action!"

If Yoko Kanno does the music, it'll be worth it. ;)

Rada, Cowboy Bebop is quite different from DBZ etc. I'd highly recommend watching it. It's only 26 episodes long, and it sucks you in. Part of it's lingering appeal is that is leaves so many questions unanswered. The character depth comes from what isn't said. Perhaps that is what sets it apart. A unique story with unique characters and a swank visual and audio style...

I also dislike anime quite a bit, but (on a different note) I enjoyed Neon Genesis Evangelion quite a bit. Aside from the flashy exterior everyone knows, it's an extremely deep study in human emotion, suffering and religious allusion.

I'm not disappointed by the news. Everyone thinks that Reeves is a hack, I know, but I don't really mind. It wouldn't be possible to actually capture the part perfectly, so no matter who gets the role, it will never live up to the fans' desires. So, while I'd rather have seen a real dramatic actor like Rufus Sewell or Edward Norton get the part, I can think of a lot worse actors to have gotten the part than Reeves.

Just to reiterate how awesome the soundtrack of Cowboy Bebop (http://icrontic.pgpartner.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=111027402/search=cowboy%20bebop/st=product/sv=title) is, I found an epic playlist (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=E6045D3EA1DCA0AB) on YouTube with most of the songs.

All stupid Keanu sterotypes/cleches can go to hell. Keanu is win.

As you might guess I'm excited to see this movie, being a casual viewer of Bebop, and a big fan of Reeves (Scanner Darkly? Constantine? wtfawesome).

For some reason, though, I can't seem to jam the idea of Cowboy Bebop live-action in my head. It doesn't seem look right.

Either way, it will prolly be interesting.
