Can anyone suggest a good open source web filter?
Story if you care:
I work for a small company (9 PCs and a MS03 Server)... and we have a policy... certain people are only to go to websites relevant to their jobs. All but one employee follows that rule. The non-compliant user's computer came down with a NASTY spyware infection (not sure exactly how nasty yet b/c I'm not looking at it until this weekend). I work for my dad and today he told me I am to look at this after hours, compli-f**king-mentary. So, I am ready to implement a web filter solution.
Thanks y'all

Time for a smoothwall box. Install a blacklist plugin such as can be found here (http://www.urlfilter.net/faq.html). Et voila.

Upgrade the smoothwall to version 3, JP. I'm pretty sure filtering is built into it.

ha ha... i was just thinking (in the last 5 minutes) that I should probably just upgrade. I have v3.0 at home and like it. Maybe i'll do that this weekend while I'm cursing and eradicating viruses. Thanks for the tip!
I just read that you are no longer a slave to the 9-5 world. Congrats.

sounds like you've made a great choice
hey, any idea what the filter is called in v3?
i'm flipped thru the smoothwall v3 admin guide and don't see anything that is a web filter or the like. maybe i missed it?
i'm looking for something that will look up a profile of web sites (or profile on the fly) and, if a specified local ip or mac address is trying to access that site, will tell the restricted computer that access is denied. During my stint in henry ford hospital I was faced with this when trying to do research on animal pornography.

The url filter for smoothwall 3.0 is what I discovered last week.

I haven't gotten it to work 100% yet because I've been busy, but it has a lot of features I think you'll like. It works right into the web interface, but you do have to do about two or three commands in the unix terminal to install it.
