I'll definitly be enjoying this bottle and it's at a price that I might put a few bottles away to continue aging, either way at under $35 this is an incredible deal.

Whiskey isn't like wine. Once it's bottled, the aging process stops. Those bottles will taste exactly the same however long you keep them (provided they're sealed properly - If not oxidation and evaporation will eventually kill them)

Damn, I just picked up and opened a bottle of Bushmills Black Bush and it's completely blown me away. I don't typically have the opportunity to try $50-100+ whiskeys so take this with a grain of salt but this whiskey is hands down the best I've ever had. It's incredible smooth at it's start but it picks up some pepper as you go despite finishing remarkably clean. The color is an unusually dark beutiful amber that I assume comes from they sherry cask aging and provides a touch of sweetness with layers of complexity to keep you tasting.

I'm definitely going to look into this one. Sounds awesome.

That's what I've read and heard often, but I've also recently had a couple of different whiskey guys on different occasions mention finding bottles of Whiskey and saying it was unbelievable, maybe they just made Whiskey better in those days.

Lynx, you'll be happy you did :)

Myrmidon, oh man, mead is soooo good when it's not a jolly rancher in a bottle.

Had a Bushmills straight with my boss yesterday.

I think that drink is becoming my favorite. It's definitely getting close to challenging sailor jerry, but I think the old sailor's got an advantage - cheap and delicious.

I do love me some rum.

Speaking of which, currently drinking a jerry and coke, and oooh boy is it on the strong side.

Dangit! I missed the Edison while in LA for SIGGRAPH. Man, looking it over now, I'm quite disappointed.

I did get drinks with friends at a bar called 'The Redwood' in downtown LA, the whole place was pirate themed. It was so awesome, best themed bar ever. Tons of rum selections too. It's where I discovered Sailor Jerry.

Last night I tried the recently released Sam Adams White Ale. Excellent wheat beer for the spring season. Go grab a sixer, you'll be glad you did.

So what are good Spring beers? I had a Holiday beer tasting before Christmas and everyone had a great time so I want to do another one but I'm not sure what to do. I thought about doing strong beer in January or February as January is strong beer month in San Francisco but I didn't think it would be accessible to a lot of my friends who always drink wimpy beer.

Christmas beer was great, good mix of lighter spiced beer and dark, often chocolate beers. Any ideas? Great, now I really really want another bottle of Brewery Ommegang's Chocolate Indulgence Stout. The perfect dark stout with a bit of dark bitter chocolate and very little sweetness. Most people liked the Sam Adams chocolate but if you come across Chocolate Indulgence you really should try it. Anchor's Christmas beer is also very good.

Chris, I hear Leinenkugel's 1888 Bock is a great spring beer. I haven't tried it myself, been having trouble finding a six at my local shops. It's technically a late Christmas/Early spring bock. Spring is spring though.

UPSLynx

Picked up a six of 1888 bock tonight.

This is good beer. Thick and rich in flavor. Slight bitterness at the finish and carries hints of caramel and chocolate. Real shame this is a seasonal.

Grab some while you can!

Also saw the local shop had Bushmills Black Bush on sale for $27 for the rest of the month in honor of St Patty's.

I'm buying a bottle before the month is up.

Nikki the hot Jersey bartender at Blvd 16 in Westwood was given carte blanche to "surprise me" - so after a wonderful (and long awaited) glass of Balvenie 15 single malt, I had one of her custom bloody marys (made with fresh horseradish among other things) and then a drink that had gin, fresh picked rosemary, and some kind of melon. After that she made a "Gin Dragon"

Take the juice from one bottle of that Ol' Janx Spirit.
Pour into it one measure of water from the seas of Santraginus V.
Allow three cubes of Arcturan Mega-gin to melt into the mixture (it must be properly iced or the benzene is lost).
Allow four litres of Fallian marsh gas to bubble through it.
Over the back of a silver spoon float a measure of Qalactin Hypermint extract.
Drop in the tooth of an Algolian Suntiger.
Sprinkle Zamphuor.
Add an olive.
Drink . . . but . . . very carefully . . .

... wtf!? :P

Currently, I am drinking a nice cup of coffee w/ a good-sized serving of unsweetened soy-milk and one teaspoon of sugar. Excellent first thing in the morning while watch the Sunday talking heads.

Last night, I sampled a bottle of Samuel Smith's Oatmeal stout while read "Marx in SOHO." I picked it up from the corner store on my way home. Suffice it to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The $3.99 bottle was worth every penny.

Overall, the beer was hearty, smooth and mildly sweet. The initial rich, malt flavor was nicely balanced by a perfect amount of hops. Neither was overpowering, but the malt definitely took center stage giving it a nice, mild sweetness.

As this is one of the first oatmeal stouts I have tried, it is hard to say how it compares to other oatmeal stouts, but my tastes buds were in heaven. I would highly recommend this to people who like to sip a dark, thick beer after a good meal, or while chatting with friends.

Today I sampled a bottle of Ninkasi's Believer Double Red, and while it's definitely not like any of the few reds I've had before, I really enjoyed it.

It has an intense hoppy bitterness that blends into a smooth malty finish. The malt also adds a hint of caramel sweetness that ties it all together nicely.

All in all, this beer has strong, complex flavours that are surprisingly well-balanced. I'd highly recommend this to people who like to sip a rich, well-balanced beer that's bitter yet sweet.

Oh yeah, that's a really good point, those do come off a lot different, I've almost always bought the widget in a can ones or gotten Guiness on tap and I forgot about the other one.

If you did have them in a can did you pour it into a glass? That can also totally change how it tastes.

Today, I tried a bottle of Rogue's Shakespeare Stout that I picked up at the corner store, which, I have discovered, has a pretty impressive selection of beer.

Overall, this beer was slightly bitter with hints of dark chocolate and toasted malt, but unlike the last few beers I have tried (Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout and Ninkasi’s Believer Double Red), the hops definitely stood out a bit more this time.

The flavours were crisp and earthy, but not as well-blended as I would have liked. It also had a bitter, semi-dry finish. Nevertheless, it was highly drinkable and surprisingly smooth.

I would definitely recommend this to people who like to sip dark, slightly bitter beers with a touch of sweetness.

Jason
2 Apr 2009, 6:09am
Just had some Duchesse De Bourgogne. What a surprising beer. The flavours were crisp and well-pronounced, but conflicting, although not necessarily in a bad way.

Overall, it struck me as fruity, tart and quite acidic, with a hint of sweetness and a sour finish. But it was also refreshing, not unlike sparkling apple cider.

I actually bounced between liking and not liking this beer between each sip. It’s not bad, though, just takes some getting used to.

I’d recommend this beer to people who like crisp, fruity beers, or hard cider, and don’t mind a little sourness or the taste of apple cider vinegar.

I don't like them as much, but they do OK. I love Guinness. If I could only drink one beer everyday for the rest of my life, it'd be Guinness draught. The Extra Stout is also pretty good, not excellent, but definitely not the worst beer ever or whatever. Mr TRiot, I am assuming you just don't like stout.(?) You should try the Guinness Draught in a can (pour to glass) or on tap.

Guinness is a bit like motor oil, but a 12 pack of bottles was the first thing I bought when I turned 21. Just wanted something different, and I ended up liking it. It doesn't go well with a bbq on a sunny day, that's a fact. Actually I can't think of one situation it goes well with, I'd feel out of place drinking one at a bar, friends house, bonfire, etc...
I'm near Milwaukee so Miller Light is engraved in my tradition, never met anyone who had gripes about it. My fall back beer for sure.

Ok now to anwser the original question... Protein shake. Yep I'm trying to gain weight/muscle. I'm out of milk so I had to mix the powder in water and as I'm writing this the bottle is almost empty but it's been a hard road, choking this thing down. Milk is the way to go

chrisWhite
4 Apr 2009, 5:05pm
Huh, Guinness is probably the beer I order most when I'm out at bars that have it. It's always the right beer to have when it's really cold out and it does go pretty well with pizza, some burgers and like, anything that can really stand it's ground with the Guinness. Makes terrible beer can chicken though :)

As for Miller Light, I've actually never had it but if you ask around on the West coast, or at least anywhere north of LA you'll hear people gripe about it. Not saying it's bad though.

Protein shake sounds yummy, I wish I could say I've ever needed to gain weight before. Maybe someday.

mmmm... gin. i usually drink Sapphire for my G&Ts, and Tanqueray for my dirty martinis. i love Hendricks, however, over ice or with a bit of tonic. i can't wait for it to warm up a bit so i can bring gin back in the rotation. it is such a warm weather drink.

lately i have been drinking Jameson almost exclusively, with a couple pieces of ice to mellow it out a little. usually i am a bourbon drinker, but i'm out of Knob Creek and the only other whiskey i have is Pikesville Rye, which is pretty rough but gives me the warm fuzzies since it's a local recipe.

had quite a few different drinks at the wedding this weekend.

Tried a Sam Adams Summer Ale. EXCELLENT beer. The touch of lemon and spice was great. Definitely a summer beer.

Tried a chocolate stout from a Michigan microbrew, can't remember the name tho. It was good, reminded me of the java stout at Kbrew ,but not as good.

And had a black and tan, it was delish.

oh, and I forgot to add.

The riverfront Cafe in Niles, MI. Great place, about 20 mins from work. Oberon on Tap. It was my first time drinking Oberon on tap, it was exceptionally good. They also have lots of other big Michigan beers on tap here.

I will be making frequent trips in the future.

Beaulieu Vineyard 2003 Rutherford Cabernet, amazing cab, had it for two and a half years when I got it as a present on my 21st, well worth the wait. I just don't drink enough wine these days, way more healthy then all the beer but way harder on the wallet.

Okay, someone just brought over a six-pack of Breckenridge Brewery's Agave Wheat beer and I think I'm in love. It's a wonderfully nice unfiltered wheat beer that reminds me of a Bavarian style I had in San Francisco last fall. The head is white, lacy and really sweet while the sweetness is just barely perceptible in the body of the ale. Nice, moderately thick and pretty complex though light enough that it's perfect for the summer heat, probably my new go to lawnmower beer when the kids are slamming Coors.

Ah, I love being a beer snob. When all the punks are drinking their piss water, I'm enjoying a beverage you can't see through.

I forgot to mention that I tried Boodles gin friday night. It was rather meh. It seemed to lack flavor... personality. It was boring gin.

Today I had some home brew Stout that makes ordinary Stout look like Pilsner! My friend who made it calls it "Power Steering Fluid". and after 2 of these no one is driving anywhere! It sure does taste good even without the 14% kick.

Friday night I visited with my old friend Macallan 18. That is still about my favorite of anything.

Rebel Yell! When it comes to bourbon, Makers Mark is outstanding, but I found Woodford Reserve to be a little more to my taste - a little smoother. Knob Creek is nice for a change, but a little rough. I found a new favorite last year, and have stocked up for the winter this year already - Rebel Yell. It is a complete sleeper IMHO. I like it way better than Makers Mark and Woodford Reserve, and it's about half their price - about $15 per bottle. I am sipping some by the fire as I am typing this! They also have a Rebel Reserve for about $20 a bottle, which is a little different in taste - fruitier? - but I wouldn't say better or worse than Rebel Yell.

I was introduced to Amaretto Sours tonight.

This will be a bad thing. They are incredible.

There's nothing bad about them, they'll be your best friend for awhile :)

Ricard's Dark. I think it's new, and a damn fine beer for mass market. Not quite Guinness, but purty gud!!
