Icrontic's 2nd Annual Oktoberfest

WHEN: 30th of October through the 2nd of November, 2008

WHERE: IcronticHQ (Warren MI.)

COST: [Drinking All-Hallow's Ale] $25 Free

wait.....wut

[B]ITINERARY:

Thursday the 30th: Arrival, pick your spots (for the out-of-towners who are flying/driving in, stake your claims), setup, drinking, relaxing.

Friday the 31st: Costume party! There will be kids present earlier in the evening, for trick-or-treating, and then they will be leaving the premises for the evening grown up festivities. We'll have a prizes for best costume: 1 for guys and 1 for girls!!

Saturday, the 1st: Kuhnhenn's trip and then back to ICHQ for more rowdiness and bawdiness

Sunday, the 2nd: group breakfast at either Ron's Cafe or My Mother's Place, tear down, etc.

Ok, some things have change since last years Oktoberfest. The 2nd thing you probably noticed was that we are limiting this event to 20 people. That's a 20ish, as in we will take 21 maybe 22 but not 23 people unless you are female and from Sweden or some other European country ;) We had 12-14 people last year so, I don't see this being a problem

What's changed from last year

Now, the 1st thing I'm sure you noticed is a cost ($). We have reserved a half-barrel of Kuhnhenn's All-Hallows Ale (pumpkin beer) for Oktoberfest. A half-barrel of beer is 15.5 gallons, or as us beer connoisseurs prefer, 124 pints of beer!

So, if you want to enjoy this fine beer from the comfort of a Sumo @ ICHQ, you need to pay the $25. That is a hell of a bargain compared to the price you would pay @ Kuhnenn's for the same amount of beer. (Example: $25 at K-brew would get ya 5 pints; $25 at ICHQ will get ya between 6-10 pints depending on how many people pay. 10 people pay you get 10+ pints for yourself, 15 people pay you get 8 pints! ) If you hate pumpkins and prefer to drink your own, Oktoberfest is still free. EXCEPTION: All beer you bring that you or someone else didn't drink is left @ ICHQ as a courtesy to prime and keebler for provided electricity, internet, etc.

In other news...bring some sleeping gear. I have to remind people of this everytime. It is cold outside by then, and well unless you like snuffie slobber'd carpet...you get the point. Also TF2 will most likely be played, so bring a PC/Laptop if you wanna join the festivus.

As always, post here to let us know if you will attend.

Well... I can't commit, but I want to go. See, there's two problems.

1. Notre Dame Football. My station covers ND very heavily, we air a show called inside ND football which we shoot for, edit, and produce. Lots of work, and my weekends are typically tied up. So no word on if I can get the time off.

2. The West Coast. If I get a job in the animation industry by then, well, obviously I can't make it. I don't know what's going to happen, but the gears are currently in motion. I have a phone interview with Disney Interactive today out of Glendale, CA. We'll see what happens. Lets just say SIGGRAPH was lucrative.

So count me in tenatively. IF you reach the max amount, bump me out. It's OK. But if you don't reach the max, count me in unless I assure you otherwise.

But this is not enough. I want Icrontic Oktoberfest this year and nothing else. It's no fair that I get to know about this and not go. But I am happy as hell for those who get to go :D

You kids be safe and have a great time! Please, somebody bring some pretzels and sausage. Please. :) Cheers.

Ok everyone, a conundrum. Need input.

As many of you have probably heard me complain about on Twitter, the NCAA football season is upon us.

The TV station I work at is on the campus of Notre Dame U.

So We've got a lot of responsibilities when it comes to ND football coverage. Combine that with the fact that my station is terribly under-staffed due to corporate cutbacks, we all are stretched to the end of our ropes these days.

Worse yet, I'm not allowed to take off weekends as a result - unless it's the bye week.

ICO08 is NOT on the bye week. So I have to work. There's no ifs, ands, or buts about it. I have to work the weekend of ICO08. So if I went, I'd be there for part of the day thursday (save for driving) and friday. I'd have to be back home on Saturday.

Now, worse yet I couldn't drink anything late Friday night. My station has a VERY strict policy on drugs and alcohol. Plus random testing. The policy is zero tolerance, it would cost me my job if I was found out.

Now, Kingpin can't go if we're not sharing a ride. I talked to him yesterday to tell him we'd only have part of the day thurs and friday, and due to the wonders of unemployment, he's tight on cash as well and can't afford to go in for All-Hallows ale. He's not even sure if he could help much on the gas.

Either way, neither one of us were thrilled about making the trip for a day and a half and having to miss out (mostly) on what the event is about - beer.

So I need opinions, what should we do? And don't be like JUST COME ANYWAYS! because I know most of you guys will do that (and trust me, any other time I would approve). I'm trying to think logically about the financial implications and time constraints before asking for those days off and making that trip.

To be honest, I don't even know if they would give me thursday AND friday off at this point, things are that tight...

I really want to go, but I want the trip to be worth it. Your thoughts?

Thrax
9 Oct 2008, 4:40pm
It sounds like you've presented a very credible case as to why you should not go. In addition to the very restricted timetable, it sounds like you've got pretty big strings attached to anything you do over the weekend.

Annes
9 Oct 2008, 4:51pm
I don't think the stress would be worth it. The entire time you would likely be watching the clock and worrying.

I just vacuumed and cleaned up the basement and put an air freshener down there so it stops smelling like dog :-/

We'll have room for 4 desktops and 2 laptops downstairs (plus my spare rig). There's enough carpeted room for about 4 or 5 people to sleep (with 3 sumos and 2 sleeping bags) plus the sofa. I also scrounged up four spare blankets. There are 3 air mattresses, but I seriously can't find the air pump that I "put away someplace safe" nm, fatcat stoled it. we're good.

This is of course in addition to the 2 sumos and 2 small sofas on the main floor (but... good luck sleeping there before 2am).

Space is going to be tight, but I think we'll be alright.

**PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN BLANKET / TOWEL / PILLOW if at all possible. If you need one, just ask me (srs, you'll want a blanket).

Cook it or go out?

I have to get a griddle, unless prime has one, which is no problem, but I have a lot of stuff in the car already, it might esplode before I get there :hair:

Well.. I am sure we will have breakfast Saturday too.... either day is fine with me.. I was just thinking of getting a consensus where either everyone stayed in and we made breakfast or all went out as a group.

I figured staying in was more cost effective and I make killer pancakes and waffles ;D

I'm in favor of eating in Saturday (or both days). I might have to make it a quick weekend, getting there Friday afternoon and leaving Saturday afternoon.

If you bring a queen size air mattress, I will take a knife to it. :range:No.

//edit: We do have single-size air mattresses, which are doable. There's no way we can do queen size down there though. We have up to 20 people on Friday night.

Well, two people would be using it, and it's smaller than two singles, so I was hoping that knifing my property could be skipped.

Not if I can't bring my queen-sized mattress.

If by defiled you mean "been sitting untouched in the basement by the utility sink with the other 3 pillows we somehow collected", then yes. ;)

CB, if you're going to sleep 2 on it then bring it along if you want. I'm still not convinced there will be enough uninterrupted space for it, but we'll see what we can do. I at least promise to not knife it as long as you aren't sleeping alone on it :p

CB
29 Oct 2008, 4:09pm
I hope so, because I need to sleep on a real bed, and I cannot afford to buy a smaller one right now. I don't want people upset about wasting space, that's why I'm sharing it this time. I would be disappointed if my friends didn't help me tetris it in when I get there. :)

Dinner Saturday, was suggested by Magic as spaghetti. It is not, however, the spaghetti that I brought last year, that would require me to have started it Monday.. which it is not :(

So.. Breakfast Sunday is in my court.. Dinner Saturday is still up in the air/up to Magic/all of us.

Just wanted to be clear on that :)

Any Detroit natives that are not gaming Saturday during the day feel like exploring the city with me, showing me where a few churches are, go with me to the public library? I have some research that I am doing for a history project, and don't feel like getting lost in downtown Detroit. Let me know. :)

A home cooked breakfast would be fun. However, I don't think it would be fun or easy to cook enough to feed all the people that will be there, in any short amount of time. Going out to eat is more practical. If everyone wants to just wait for a home-cooked meal, i'll help cook(if there are a few others who will help); cooking breakfast for our group is going to be like cooking for a small army. ...i'm looking forward to Ron's!

Stick with me Sharky... you do have to start early (before everyone is ready) but it doesn't take too long.

I cook for 14 - 18 people every year at Christmas.. its not too hard, you just have to know what order to do it in :D

CB

I've cooked crepes for that many people on several occasions, but in that case it's just a matter of people standing in line (or remembering who's up) to get the next crepe.

I've also cooked scrambled eggs for that many people. In that case it was a matter of having a really big (30 in.) skillet.

I had a great time, everyone!

I got home at about 10:45 last night after dropping off CB and sharkydart. The flat tire on the rental car debacle and I-75 being cut down to one lane (which prompted us to stop for a leisurely dinner at Bob Evans) turned the drive into an all-day affair.

I was a little surprised by it, but it made me painfully sad to see all my friends together and having a great time and knowing how close I was to it all and still missing out.
