Reports say the former Iraqi leader was arrested during a raid in Tikrit. News conference scheduled for 7 a.m. eastern time.
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein has been captured alive in his hometown of Tikrit, a member of the U.S.-appointed Governing Council said Sunday.
Council member Dara Noor al-Din told The Associated Press that the council was informed of the former dictator's capture in a telephone call from L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator for Iraq.

DAMN! Well done if it's actually him and not one of those look-a-likes.
I wonder if Saddam is like a starfish. Break a piece off and a new Saddam grows from it. :D

Bad news for Democrats though... :(
This is a huge moral boost for Republicans and will certainly increase GW's chances for re-election... :banghead:
YeeHaa! As they say in Texas. Now, Maybe Ossama will pop his head out and we'll get him too. This is pretty big news gang.

It is confirmed, several ways. He has been examined thoroughly. We will hear and perhaps see more details, when the President speaks from the cabinet room at noon, Eastern Time.
But, definitely confirmed this is Saddam, for now. Enough was learned from previously captured parts of his core group in interrogations to profile him very well, and in ways that a double cannot duplicate -- physical as well as mental.
But, the job is not totally done. those who remain of Saddam's followers need to be rooted out. I simply hope that with Saddam they found enough of his core writings and records (some were found earlier) that his core group can be profiled and found. If you know how someone acts in fine detail, you can predict who he will contact, what kind of subculture he hangs in, and thus what he is most likely to do and thus find him by looking for that envrionment and testing with decisive probes where those people he hangs with can be found-- because where the most resistance is in pockets, there lies the enemy.
this has parrallels in tech, there are those who would impose their vision to the exclusion of all else and not allow for more common needs. In Saddam's case, many citizens of Iraq either abandoned him or turned actively against him, or he would not have been caught and the US would have suffered many more massive losses than it did. Some of those people knew him. that info was used. I will not say Bill Gates is a political dictator, outside of Microsoft, but look what is happening to Microsoft. they pulled support more and more with 98 because without the Java VM 98 could not be used to do what Bill Gates wanted Microsoft to do, and because others persuaded many that Bill Gates was not the be-all and end all of computing. Sun now has a Java Desktop, based on an open-source core (it IS Linux plus true Java), and is yet another competitor for Bill Gates to contend with. SCO is being forced to SHOW exactly what it claims Linux infringes on, and by big established companies like Sun, Novell, and IBM, though IBM is the front man right now. Lesson, when you have a model that is dependent on crushing competition and you do not watch and allow for lots of chenge, you have to expect things to snowball. It happened with Stalin, Hitler, lots of teh highest and mightiest money dynasties, adn has happened again and again through history. unix started as a cooperative educational development, so have Linux and BSD, and many other software dev efforts that matured into properties. RedHat's Enterprise product is an example. When the owners of the end product become so enamored by ownership and taking profits that feature selling replaces underlying core work, there will have to be a reaction over the longer term. Dictators want to own nations or intellectual rights as power things more than as things offered for fair trade. Inevitably, over the long term those interests get internally and externally forced to break up, as happens in all human endevours.
With politics we get wars, with computing competition is needed now and is coming into play. Humans contribute for good or ill, in both. If it becomes one over many, that one falls if ti becomes a personal power grab to too much of an extent, if it becomes one more for many instead, the one will benefit beause the one is contributing to the many and the many reward the one as they can each corporately (as a group, or as subgroups) and individually use the ideas to benefit themselves. The trick is to balance, and not give your life away while at the same time giving true deep and surface value for money. This is not just imho, this is human history.
John.

Congratulations to U.S. forces on his capture but I'm not to sure how much this will achieve. I guess we'll have to wait and see, the real big fish (no, not the member here:) ) is one Mr Bin Laden and his cohorts. Not too many people, reporters etc seem to be focusing on that fact.
Either way though congrats to the U.S. Army.

Maybe the murdering of our troops can cease in iraq and we can get down to the business of forming out the renovation.
Now iraqi's have no reason to fear the prick so let them join in.
Rehab for all of them.

Sadly, I highly doubt the capture of Saddam will reduce the violence against coalition forces, for some reason I have a feeling he hasn't had much to do with it and has just been trying to save his own skin in recent months.
WOW... What a great piece of news for a Sunday Morning. Where did I find it... here!
Saddam should get a VERY FAIR Trial and air it live on TV. The world should be able to see EVERYTHING he did and what he stood for. He will be found guilty and be put to death.

Only if he's tried in Iraq... or Texas ;) If it's an international trial, odds are slim to none there'll be a death penalty involved.

Saddam won't be turned over to any so-called "World Court". He'll be tried in Iraq. Then it's only a question as to whether it will be Nuremburg justice (a noose), or the fate of Mussolini.

If the new Iraqi Gov and Iraqi population are anything like the few guys in the audience in the video (http://g.msn.com/0VD0/00/00?m=n_sanchez_saddam_031214&csid=Msnbc), Saddam will most likely die.

Well, this is good and bad. As happy as I am to have him caught, G.W. is (nearly) the last person I want taking credit for it. Although I'm fairly conservative, Bush is a moron. He calls himself a republican, and then signs a massive medicare bill. Another 4 years of him is not a good thing.

I don't think this thread is a debate about who should take credit or the politics involved in this

And, last I checked, Bush hadn't taken credit for it. He credited the military, soldiers and intelligence people, as well as the people who ratted Saddam out. He could have gloated a whole lot more than he did.

Oh honestly. You're being overly sensitive. It was simply an observation. You both know as well as I do that G.W. will take credit for this, and that, IMO, is a bad thing. By definition, a forum is "a medium of open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper or a radio or television program."
I was simply making a comment on how this may impact us in the future.

It may have escaped most peoples notice but Iraq suspended capital punishment 6 months ago when the new regime was installed. So under current legislation they can't execute him even if he is found guilty of murder, genocide crimes against humanity etc, etc.
Lets hope they reintroduce it very quickly, eh! Its also funny that it was members of Saddam's own family that gave him up and he thought they were the only ones he could trust!
Oh and Bush isn't taking credit for this cos
a. He doesn't deserve it, U.S. Forces do.
b. After his "the war is over speech" back in May (I think) on the U.S. ship most of the world thought it was very ill judged and it back fired on him badly. Even he ain't so stupid as to make the same mistake twice.

No let him do time. A LOT of time. Let him just rot in prison not giving him some grand ending like a execution. Just lock him up and thow away the key.
that probly what they should do, if he dies his followers will think he a "marter" is that the word?? Maryter... hmm
The only problem with having him sit in a prison is the nagging feeling in the back of people's minds...... "What happens if he gets rescued or freed by gorillas? The people of Iraq and the rest of the world need to have final, undeniable proof that Saddam is gone, done, fished, and can NEVER harm anyone else. Heck, there are many people that run nice drug business or gangs from prison. They are more protected, they get health care, and they get education and food. Why continue to pay for Saddam to eat, when there a lot of Iraqi’s that do not have food. Why cloth him and care for him when he gets older when mothers, wives, and children have no such chance.
Saddam has caused way too much death and despair to his own people to deserve to have his people continues to support him (fanatically) for the rest of his life. He needs to pay for his crimes against his people, against the environment, against the world. He needs to meet his maker and it needs to be soon.
