$215 but the only thing i am curious about is that some retailers have this cpu with 512kb of L2 cache but others have it with 1mb.
I have read a lot of rumours though that this cpu is being released with 512kb of L2 cache.
Another thing: It's listed as a socket 754 cpu :wtf:
Webmasters at Newegg drunk?
All we need now is a mainboard that is worth the name and that actually is working.

Here's a screenie that shows it has 512kb of cache:

Yeah the 64's with a perfomance rating are the 754 chips and the FX series are the 940 chips.
I wonder how the VIA chipset works with the 754 chips.
Considering they are single channel ram setups anyways it makes me wonder if the VIA will be as good as the N-Force 3.

I went looking around and found this (http://www.overclockers.com/tips00500/) at overclockers.com, interesting stuff to say the least.

If that's true, Neweggs is a 512kb cache cpu:
http://images10.newegg.com/productimage/19-103-425-01.JPG
They were referring to a socket 939 ? Is that the socket 940 or is it a newer socket for single cpu boxs' or ??
Tex
so do you thing its a awesome cpu, is it a good upgrade for someone with a barton 2500+ or wait till they come down more?

Don't think so Bud. From a Palomino or an early tbred, maybe. I'm holding on to socket 939 and the FX chips in the spring 2004.

Hmm.... fun for me running an old A type T-Bred 1800+....
This was available on NewEgg the other day as I was looking when you recommended them on the other thread.
Still, the question arrises, are they actually worth buying? The benchmarks don't look too bad, but they don't look amazing either.

The only problem the way i see it is that currently, Via is the best option for a mainboard to it.
The boxed version is available at Komplett here in Norway but NOT in the uk. Give it a week and it will be available there as well.
In your case and if i had the dough, i would go for it actually. Considering the speed you have on your rig, a new mainboard and this cpu would be great for you NS. It will be about £170 for the boxed version in the UK.

Well, I was actually going to get it from the US and get someone to ship it over for me, in which case, I could get the mobo AND processor for under £200. NewEgg also have nForce 3 motherboards for 754 pin processors (as shown here - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&DEPA=1 )

Fantastic price considering what the board has on it.

This is strange, the Athlon 64's are listed at 1.8ghz with 512k cache on NEgg, rather than 2ghz with 512k cache..... any idea whats going on?
GHoosdum
17 Dec 2003, 11:01pm
It's probably due to the mix-up between the 1.8/1MB cache version and the 2.0/512MHz version... maybe newegg misunderstood and took the lower rating on both?
Enverex
17 Dec 2003, 11:01pm
Yes, looks like it's a listing mistake, quoting to a user review -
This is a 2GHz processor with 512KB of L2 cache, not a 1.8GHz processor with 1MB of L2 cache as some of you may have heard. Take a look at the OPN if you don't believe me.
So thats reassuring.

Weird!
Perhaps a 2800+ version as well?

Right, with that Leadtek board and the Athlon 64 3000+ comes to £177 shipped to the buyer, so I just need to add shipping to me, and thats the final price..... other than a cooler....
Does anyone have any recommendations for a cooler for it? Nothing expensive though. Doesn't seem to be a huge selection on NewEgg, though remember, I wont be overclocking much as the chip seems to top out around 2.2ghz (from 2ghz) and runs default at 1.5v - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&DEPA=1

Since ThermalRight hasn't put out a cooler for Socket754 yet, I can't really make a recommendation. ;)
But the Coolermaster Newegg carries looks decent but not much different from the stock Socket 754 HSF - for the $19 it would cost to get the Coolermaster shipped, that covers the price difference between OEM and Retail boxed A64-XP3000+ chips, so I'd say get the retail box and get the warranty too... If you can put up with a little extra noise, a 60x25MM fan can be put on the heatsink for some more CFM, until better heatsinks come out for Socket 754.

Zalman seems to make the only enthusiast socket 754 heatsink.
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=35-118-109
If you're willing to dish out ~$40 this thing will do an excellent job over the stock sink. They should have them in UK stores.

Or... you could check UK retailers.
Enverex, are customs not going to hit you up for VAT and duty when it comes over the ocean? They do that to us just coming across the US-->Canada border...

Yeah, it's for sale over here at £38 ($66) which is more than I am willing, or have, to spend on a HeatSink.

Firstly, there is no-where near as much choice, secondly, it will cost roughly £300 in total and third, the Athlon 64 3000+ isn't actually for sale over here.

Sometimes. It depends firstly on luck, and secondly on how much you mark it as.

So much for NAFTA...
*edit* unintelligent blabber removed with apologies.
NAFTA = not what we (we being Canadian consumers) thought it would be when it was rolled out lo those many years ago. It's all a big political game, far beyond my comprehension other than to know I still pay duty on many or most consumer goods imported from the U.S.A., regardless of their original manufacture point.
Back to topic, find any volunteer buyers yet Enverex? Firmly decided on the 3000+ and the Leadtek?

Buy the boxed version. The cooler is supposed to be ok on the 64.

Thats what I was going to do anyway, as the decent cooler is way too expensive and the other ones on NewEgg are just crap anyway.
Al: Ha, yeah, would be a little pointless just buying a heatsink from the US.

Yea, I'm a very lazy person with a fair amount of money so you could probably understand my logic. I'd rather have the heatsink now for $60, then having to go through all the problems of shipping it, working out payment, and whatever regulations there are on shipping international just to save $5 or so.

So I take it I can pretty much scrap this idea then?
As currently NewEgg are raising their prices daily, and if it happens anymore then I won't be able to afford one anyway.

Wait a few months Enverex. If you bought a A64 3000+ S754 now, you'll be kicking yourself in 3 months when the Dual 939 versions arrive.
Also Computer components prices drop after the Xmas season.
A easy upgrade for you would be to replace that KT400 8K9A2+ with the Epox KT600 8KRA2+ to get FSB400. It's a drop in replacment for both the 8K9A2+ & the 8K9A3+ mobos. Just did it myself 2 days ago (with a cloned HD). All you'll need is the Realtek AC650 Sound driver. :)

I am trying to plan for the long term as I no longer have a job, and with this Uni work, don't have time for one, meaning if I buy something else, then I am not going to be upgrading for a LONG time, so I wanted to make it last. Going for a small upgrade is just going to waste it all to be honest.
Also, no way in hell will I be able to afford dual 64s.

The 3000+ is £160 today only at hwb.no. Pretty good price i must say. The cpu's are confirmed the 27:th.
I think Omega meant 939 is dual channel memory, not dual cpu's. Your reply is likely the same, they'll come out xpensive to start.
Actually, they're supposed to come out at a much lower pricepoint because the s939 chips are going to feature much higher yields, and significantly less complex designs.

Argh! What the hell is hwb.no. ??
Though I have been pretty much held back into waiting now anyway, it's just Christmas doesn't seem very special without present(s). I'm not material at all!

www.hwb.no is the store which has them for that price. Great store who's owner started Komplett a few years back.

Eh, its in silly money. Thing is, if I wanted to import, it would be much more effective from the US as it is cheaper to start with and will be alot less if I get hit with import (which I am actually more likely to with norway).
