View Full Version : computer not working except in safe mode
upgraded my spysweeper but said it was damaged when done restarting computer. tried to do a recovery before installing. now when turn computer on shows splash screen the stops on a black screen can turn off and back on then will go to safe mode and windows will load up. Ran my FixIt utilities recovery disk and tried to do recovery to before installing the upgrade for spysweeper and also tried to do a system restore neither one works. I have a hi jack this log but cannot copy to a cd or print on printer to scan on our other printer to the computer i am using now (says printer not installed and something about printer spool not there) had a trojanhorse agent_f.cx hit my zonealarm a few days ago. deleted and reinstalled zone alarm (said was too big for quarantine folder) any ideas what to do next????

Depends on how much time you feel like wasting trying to fix the problem. I'd suggest just doing a windows Repair Install, that is if you have access to a windows XP cd. It should fix whatever is wrong with your machine.
If not then you'll have to systematically keep rebooting into safe-mode and uninstalling programs from add-remove like your spyware and zone-alarm and then reboot and see if the problem is solved. You should also get a program called cccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) and run it each time you've unisntalled something.

i'd probably pop into recovery console and try the "repairing windows in 8 simple commands" (google.com) (not sure if it's intended for this specific application) then if that doesn't work probably just do the repair install as kryyst suggested. if you get into windows i would get adaware and spybot on there and updated... go back into safe mode and do full scans with each, then back into regular mode and use panda active scan (pandasoftware.com/activescan)... to do another check (takes a long time)... if you come up clean, you're probably clean.

Phuschnickens, you are fired! :mean:
Repairing Windows XP in Eight Commands (http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp) just happens to be an Icrontic-owned article! It's right here, at Icrontic!
:) :p
All's well. I just found the irony amusing.

I know I know. Forgive me... i was quite too lazy at the moment to setup a link = very lazy.
But, for the record, google gives icrontic at #1 hit (Google's Repair Win Hits (http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=repairing+windows+in+8+simple+commands&btnG=Google+Search))
thanks finally managed to get to system restore ran that for the last restore point saved and started working. (wasnt sure it would work because i had a worm hit my restore files a couple of months ago.) Still cant put computer into standby mode but everything else seems to be working. should i post an hjt log to have checked to be sure i got rid of the trojan and worm completely??? havent tried to download anything yet to see if it can come in undamaged yet.

Sure, go ahead and post a HJT, but open a thread in Spyware and Virus Removal forum, not here.

when you start the new thread it's probably best to reference this thread with a link too so people know what's going on.
