i've been trying to install ubuntu on my machine but failed...

here's my setup

Foxconn Socket 754 AMD Board
AMD 754 Athlon64 3000+
2.5GB RAM (2x1GB,1x512MB)
120GB HDD (80+40GB)
ATI X600 XT 256MB GPU

now when i start up the machine, it boots from Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop CD, then it freezes (or just halts) while loading the installations... just after selecting English at beginning of installation process...

now when i tried installing Ubuntu Server 8.04 it goes through fine, but since i only get a command line interface i don't know where to go from there as i'm a newbie...

anyone else come across this issue before? cheers

A) 8.10 is out, you should probably try that one instead.
B) Some systems have trouble with the Desktop installer; you can try two things:
1) If you got to the screen where you could select Full Install, Live mode, check your CD for defects, etc, you can hit F6 (more options) from there, and add XFORCEVESA to the end of the list of tags you'll see at the bottom - for instance, the line will likely end with "ro quiet splash --"; just make it "ro quiet splash XFORCEVESA --" and it will force the display driver to try the most basic version it has.
2) If you never even got to that screen, try the Alternate Installer, which you can also find on the Ubuntu site; it will install with a text GUI, which might allow you to set up the graphics properly such that you'll be able to boot it correctly after installation.

If you're set on 8.04, try B part 1; I'd suggest going with 8.10 and trying it that way. For what it's worth, I always download both the Desktop and Alternate installers at once just in case the Desktop version doesn't work.

Give it a shot and let us know what happens.

thanks Snarkasm... i ended up installing Windows XP Professional... then installing Ubuntu on Virtual Box, which supprisingly installed fine!!

I would love to get 8.10 but unfortunately i don't have broadband at home, so i'll try downloading it at work! although i've requested a FREE CD on ubuntu website :)
