Computer was infected this afternoon. I fixed it (at least no symptoms and clean scans). Then, i noticed i wasn't able to go into safe mode but was still able to boot normally. Next I couldn't boot normally at all and the computer gets stuck in a boot loop. Now I have no repair install option and recovery console doesn't load... i just get dumped at a black screen (if I try off the disk... of my rec. cons. partition i get restarted). I feel like crying. Am i about to backup and do a fresh install?

XP SP3 was infected with ??? not really sure but trojan.dnschanger and perhaps zlob too... you can see my hijackthis log here (http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78733) if that helps you figure out what the infection was (if even necessary).

i'm feeling pretty needy today but if anyone can help, as usual, i'd appreciate it.

thank you

phu

feeling mucho stupido... forgot that I could hook this hard drive to another computer and run chkdsk on it from there

this is why i try to only work 8 hours days... i'm not very "efficient" after 8 hours

Okay... i ran chkdsk from another pc... a LOT of errors were found/fixed... i immediately ran a repair install. Now i can boot into recovery console again and regular boot again. Safe mode still hangs on .....windows\system32\driver\mup.sys. I've read about this symptom briefly... it could be anything i guess. Could be because i have a runny nose. Let me know what you guys think... maybe I could live without safe mode???? although, this is the computer I use to fix OTHER peoples' computers.

Hook the drive back up to the other computer, back up your data, and reinstall Windows... If you need the computer to fix other computers you'll want it in full working order.

Yeah, thanks for the nudge... I'd rather be lazy and not do it until completely necessary, but when it's completely necessary, I probably won't have time. I know I won't be able to find a lot of the programs that I have currently installed... another lesson... backup, backup, backup

prime: what av program are you currently using... not still avg free, right?

that's what I use on all my computers... ever have a problem with the automatic updates? ... it seems to work 50% of the time... the rest of the time i'm manually updating.

Yes the latest Free AVG is pretty hit or miss with it's updates seems about every couple of days it can't connect to the update server. They claim it's because of load for the free edition and that their support is for the paid ones so basically deal with it. I'm actually fine with that answer as all I want service wise is what their free edition delivers.

Yeah, I agree... I don't really care about having to update myself every once in a while... but I feel better knowing that they are aware and basically don't care.

Thanks for the answer.
