View Full Version : Forum Upgrade

Shorty
25 Dec 2003, 2:23pm
It twas xmas day, nothing was stirring.. so I thought Id just upgrade the forums while it's deadly quiet

Please report all bugs you find in this thread, including browser/operating system and a clear description :)

There are ALOT of new features, so take your time to familiarise yourself with the whole thing.. it's very new.

Why did we upgrade? Performance, features, configurability and an excuse to overhaul the design :D

EDIT<<<

I know some smilies are missing, Im just upgrading those as well ;)

EDIT;

Good work m8! I like it a lot and it is sooo much faster too. :D

Shorty
25 Dec 2003, 3:06pm
It should be considerably faster. There are alot of SQL queries.. which have been replaced with conditional statements in the HTML templates. It's certainly more expansive to adapt.

I have a few more things to do on it, but it's shaped up well :)

w00t!!! :celebrate

*poke* (http://virtues-of-evil.no-ip.com/smilies) :D

P.S: in the "reply to thread" part you could make the smilies part smaller by removing the "screwed" and "party" smiley from there.

Shorty
25 Dec 2003, 3:17pm
The smilies are called randomly now (for some reason I have no clue of). Im going to edit that to stop it ;D

Looking good. Awkward to start reading on the left but will get used to it. Nice work!

Yep ;) ... thats a "feature" apparently ;D

I might remove that.. as its a legacy from the hybrid/threaded mode.. which I removed anyway (it was a pointless and a pain in teh..)

My avatar has been that way for months... :hrm:

So where's the option to put avatars and such back in the left column where they belong? ;)

25 Dec 2003, 3:54pm
Ok so I've thought about it and my personal quirks are:

Name at the top of a post is just to big. Also when it's bold cause of staff. I think some sort of limit for the diameters of avatars is needed (if there isn't already).
The right side of the top of a post where it says the name of the poster seems empty. Needs something I think. Maybe if a rating or award system is implemented, it'll look nicer ;)
There's something which I don't know that just makes it a bit harder to read a thread. I guess it could be cause I'm not used to the design

Lincoln
25 Dec 2003, 3:58pm
Ive not added it ;) I will once I have final defacto code from Jelsoft. So you will just have to be patient :p

Quickly now, before I go and get used to it or something... :p

Shorty
25 Dec 2003, 3:58pm
Its a totally new design, different from what you are used to.. so it will take some small time to adjust ;)

Its different for me.. Ive been looking at this for the last 25 days ;D

No rating or award system. It's been discussed and is a no-no.. so Il find something else ;)

[/list]

Same here. I think it is because when you read from post to post you have to go past a members name/avatar/etc plus their signature. Which to me, breaks up the individual posts quite a bit.

Shorty
25 Dec 2003, 3:59pm
Quickly now, before I go and get used to it or something... :p
Nope... get used to it ;)

Jelsoft havent decided exactly on the gold code element.. I see no sense hacking it in.. when it will be default in the next update :D

OOH, I like this. Only one small request: Is it possible to have the forum/thread link at the bottom of the thread page as it was in the previous VB version? I enjoyed the convenience of accessing the main thread link at the bottom of the page without having to scroll to the top to find it.

Shorty

Mr_Bojingles

I know it used to be in a members profile, but I don't even see it there anymore.

mmonnin
25 Dec 2003, 4:16pm
Milestones need to be taken off of the new posts.

And yes the "Short-Media Forums > Hardware Forums >" tree needs to be at the bottom as well. One of my quirks on AMDMBforums is that you have to click on the forum jump to go back to the forum you cam from or scroll to the top.

Lookin good Shorty:)

Shorty
25 Dec 2003, 4:18pm
In answer to both questions...

Post count is completely removed now. Where as before it was sort of visible, it is completely removed :) We never wanted/used it anyway ;)

The nav bar will return at the bottom later on today :)

I now need to go off and do some SQL stuff, some general maintenance.. and other bits and bobs. So il reread this thread in a few hours :)

25 Dec 2003, 4:21pm
Quick thought: With all the empty space beside the ava/name, what about moving sigs up top beside them? Or allowing "partial" sigs up there and regular below? Actually, as I type this, I think it's a terrible idea =P but I'll leave it here in case anyone wants to discuss.

Loving the new design, as noted it's also much quicker to load. Props.

[QUOTE]

I understand the reasoning for hiding it in a members profile(instead of having on their posts) but it was always nice to look it up to feed the "curiosity" of how many posts you had. Not to be used for bragging rights or to make you above others for having more posts, just was nice to know.

I'm sorry Shorty, but the upgrade just plain sucks!!!

Okay okay, I know I didn't have anyone going with that one. I love it, I love it so much I just want to get down on my knees and cry at the sheer beauty of it. Also the pixel symmetry balance of the index pages main logo lines are spot on, whoever perfected that baby deserves a medal.;)

Shorty
25 Dec 2003, 5:51pm

Mrs Shorty is unfortunately required to work all over xmas & new year. The joys of dating a police officer. She worked from 7am till 4pm.. then 7pm till 11pm yesterday and is doing the same again today. We had our xmas three weeks ago ;) along with my family xmas two weeks ago.. as my parents are away enjoying their first xmas without us kids around :)

Clear all your cookies. Some have reported cookie clashes, so clear the temp internet & cookies.. and all will function as it should :)

Bothered sir..

It's bold because some people's sigs have bold tags in it and haven't closed them properly. I have already fixed around about 9 sigs that have bad tables/tags and bbcode in them. Il find who the next culprit is in this thread.. in a moment :)

The trick with mods is to have 2-3 online on a forum, 24\7. With a few, there are times when mods are not looking out for things. Since the mods are usually volunteers, they get to choose when they are on. Some mods take time off to concentrate on life, from time to time, and this can happen at random.

Frankly, I think BlackHawk is good as mod, and could become a very good sysadmin.

John.

Enverex

Lincoln

BTW why does blackhawk sometimes use the name vitues of evil as previously stated in this thread. Isn't there plenty of mods anyway.

He changed his name - so he doesn't use it "sometimes," he just plain uses that name now ;) I'm not sure what that second bit is about, but he's been a mod longer than all but 3 or 4 people on the staff (I'm including IC tenure as well).

I didn't mean to insult anyone i thought that blackhawk had gotten a second username and wondered why. Can't he do what he wants with just one. As for the number of mods it prolly can't get high enough. He only has the one account. However, there will always be references to him across the forum with the old username.. as is the way dynamic software can be flawed ;)

His posts will display his new name but old threads he created will always say "Blackhawk".. as the BB software doesn't update the thread table to compensate :)

I hope that clears up that misunderstanding :)

I'm running 1280X960 and it looks fine. The only thing I noticed was that there seems to be more room on the screen, not less. :-/

Mine is running at 1280x1024 and there is plenty of room. Everything is well spaced. I like it this way.

upgrade looks pretty sleek, one question though, a lot of times when I've been on forums and they change around the style they leave the "old one" available as user selectable so you can use the old forum style if you want, any chance of that happening or because its VB3 is everything completely different?

User CP-->options--> Style
There is now an option called "Old School Postbit". That style contains the old style horizontal postbit :):)

Also the location of members seems to be missing. I always liked to see where people live. Any chance of putting it back in?

No luck Shorty, still doesn't work.
As you can see, a few minutes later there are new posts but using the link doesn't show them...

Works for me. Seems like your browser is caching the page. Try pressing Ctrl+F5 to do a forced full reload. As that is a dynamic page, so it should always be right.

Sorry, my bad. I didn't follow Shorty's post to the letter and I was saving the search result as my favorite instead of the URL he posted.
However, there seem to be a time limit and now (about an hour later) the search shows only two posts instead of all the posts since I made the link.

Do I make sense?

Yeah it does mate :)

I did just check the post logs and it's just quiet at the moment. Il monitor it over the next few days and see if there is still a bug in it.. but I think it's just cause there isn't alot of peeps about posting :)

There is definitely a bug or the time limit is very short cause I just clicked on it and now I get only one post (yours above) while a few minutes ago it was showing 4 or 5 threads.

Never like the new date format so i'm glad it was changed back. The reply page look ok now. Everything is visible without the need to sidescroll at 1024x768. Good work shorty. :type:

EQ... I've got some tweaking to do with the search (mainly to exclude milestones from showing up in the "new posts". Il take a snitch at it and see what it does :)

Ive also added "Thread started by:" in the forum display, so its more clear why a username is listed under a thread title :) and added a break between stickies/announcements and the main forum threads. Should help navigation.

They don't show up and never did afaik but unfortunately, the "view new posts" keeps reseting every x amount of minutes/hours thus showing only the ones since the last reset.

Thanks for all the hard work!

Ive removed them from the search index, but it can take a while to repopulate. I did some tests but Ive submitted a report to VBulletin anyway on it. It's curious and I dont think we are the only ones with this wierd problem. Il keep ya informed :)

Added a bottom navigation bar as well. Just under the quick reply box when viewing a thread.. and underneath the threads when you view a forum. That should make navigation a snap :)

Any news on the location info in posts that were mentioned earlier. I too like knowing where people are from. Thanks for adding the bottom navigation links. It really help to not have to scroll to the top in every post.

I just noticed that when you perform a search and nothing is found... The page does not redirect you to anywhere. Also, there is no link to take you back to the forum home page. The main news home page is there, and an scroll box to select where to go, but no easy shortcut or redirection... Just my two cents.

Heres something interesting to add in. Time spent in forum. Completely pointless, yet interesting :)

Good call on the location bothered, I was going to say it myself but I think people are sick of hearing my voice.

Well I'm not sick of hearing your voice, or is that seeing your voice?

The new forums are alot better I think. I just finished upgrading the forums on my site to the VB 3 Gold, and love it. There are quite few extra features too. Admin CP is also great.

I have an upgrade path determined and ready for VBulletin 3 gold. Once the new sitecode is up and running, that's the next task.

VB3 is a great product, we are happy with it :)
