View Full Version : I'm gonna go for 4Ghz

Buddy J

I'm gonna join the 4GHz club. As soon as my Newegg order arrives, I'll be rocking the following:

DFI LT X48-T3RS
OCZ ReaperX 2GB DDR3-1333
E8400
Xigmatek HDT-S1283
and some OCZ Freeze

It can be done. Praz did it (http://csd.dficlub.org/forum/showpost.php?p=52756&postcount=17). I'm gonna make it happen.

If you get an E0 stepping, 4 GHz should be fairly easy to hit, Pete. And since the E0's have been out a while and the E8400 is a good seller, I think you stand a pretty good chance of getting the new stepping. From all I've heard, they overclock more easily and also run cooler. Good luck with it, Pete. :D

4GHz will be a walk in the park, Pete. Set your sights higher :) I've got an older revision E8400 that does 4GHz without too much trouble. As mudd mentioned, most of the new ones are E0 revision that'll do quite a bit more (think 4.5GHz)

I'll probably be either RAM-limited or board-limited with this system. Just gonna have to see how things go.

Last night was an exercise in failure.
The case I was planning on using until I had the funds to get a cool new one wouldn't work with my OCZ 720W modular PSU. Mount holes didn't work.
I went to Best Buy and got an Antec 900 because it's all they had. Went home and installed everything. Went to connect the EPS12V connector and the cable was too short. Pulled out the PSU and installed my SiltentXStream 600W. It works but there's a mess of cables everywhere, I tried to tuck/bind/manage them but I'm still not pleased.

By 1 a.m. I had everything installed (I think) so I went to bed without powering it on. The booting/installing Windows heartache can begin tonight.

Photos are coming this evening. Victory comes with persistence.

This concerns me.. what case?

It's an older Deer case. Doesn't appear on their website anymore. It's very similar to this (http://www.deer-group.com/pc_structure.htm) on the inside however. The two screws on the right side fit fine, but the holes on the left were too low compared to the threaded holes on the PSU. Probably 1/4" off center. With only two points attached to the flimsy metal, the PSU drooped due to the case's crappy PSU support bracket, causing it to sit on the fins of my heatsink.

Well Buddy, don't let two little wholes hold you back. Just man up and grab a drill and make some new ones. But it does sound like you upgraded to a much better case. Maybe you're better off after all. Then again, I couldn't imagine best buy's prices being anywhere near reasonable.

And do you know, last year, there wasn't a single SATA cable in that whole store. I wonder if they stock one now.

You could angle your cpu heatsink downwards to blow on the Nothbridge heatsink you have.

I'm not, but I'll try it later and see how it goes.

I can't rotate it. :( The ReaperX ramsinks are in the way. I've got the side panel off the case right now, so I wedged an 80mm fan in sitting on top of the NB heatsink. It's helped a bit.

I just dropped the CPU voltage down from 1.36350 to 1.3V. It's still stable. I'm gonna fiddle with lowering the voltages. Seems some people can do 4GHz at stock voltage, so that's a good sign.

Buddy J
14 Dec 2008, 10:52pm
Jah. That's with GPU2 and a regular client.

Leonardo
14 Dec 2008, 11:32pm
I am completely unfamiliar with the ATI drivers other than they are called Catalyst. Until very recently, the Nvidia GPU2 required a sizable chunk of a CPU core's power for running. With the newest driver, the GPU itself does nearly 100% of the work - less than 1% load on a CPU core. What is the CPU load required for the ATI GPU client currently? When ATI gets this straightened out eventually, you will be able to run an SMP client on the multi-core CPU and a GPU client for each GPU core.

Buddy J
14 Dec 2008, 11:38pm
I updated the Catalyst driver to 8.12 today and it seems GPU2 still uses the core quite heavily. SMP isn't viable here, sadly.

Leonardo
14 Dec 2008, 11:46pm
The Catalyst drivers aren't weak, and ATI GPUs definitely hold their own, but due to the architectural differences, Nvidia GPUs at the moment are better suited for the type of calculations required by Folding@Home. Who knows, give it another year and the opposite might be the case.

Thanks. I don't think it's at the limit yet, but it'll take some fiddling with to see just how far it'll go. I've got no idea how far I can push the memory, or how much faster the CPU will go. I think it's more of a matter of getting adequate cooling on the chip. I've heard of E8400s doing 4.4GHz at 1.4v, but when I was running at 1.36v, my temps were already edging in on 60C at load. That's too hot for me.

Buddy, I had a similar issue with my plug. I solvedit by routing it under the video card near the slot entrace. There's enough gap there for me on my rig to get the wire under there and avoid draping it over the video card and thus in the way of cooling equipment. Thought I'd give a heads up so you could possibly enjoy your other PSU.

Buddy J
23 Jan 2009, 4:08pm
I wish that would have worked, but in my case, even if I tried to go in a straight line from the PSU to the plug, I'd still have been just a hair short. It's all good though. My rig is rocking despite the lower wattage PSU. When the time comes that I need the bigger unit, I'll break down and extend the cable.
