With the possibility of George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy series' becoming a TV series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_Thrones_(TV_series)) on HBO, I thought it would be fun to pick the cast for them. Here's mine, feel free to create your own or add in characters I may have neglected to name.
Lord Eddard Stark: Christian Bale
Lady Catelyn Stark: Nicole Kidman
King Robert Baratheon: John Goodman
Queen Cersei Lannister: Reese Witherspoon
Rob Stark: Shia Lebeouf
Tyrion Lannister: wait for it... Shorty!;)
Daenerys Targaryen: Natalie Portman
Petyr 'Littlefinger' Baelish: Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Jaime Lannister: Brad Pitt
Anyways that's just a few that came to me. I'll probably add more later.
Those are all movie actors, they would never do TV. Most likely, they will cast relatively unknowns in the biggest rolls with a few recognizable TV faces in secondary roles. With that in mind, here are some possibilities:
Tywin Lannister: Wilford Brimley (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000979/)
Daenerys Targaryen: Kristin Kreuk (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0471036/)
Eddard Stark: Jeffrey Dean Morgan (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0604747/)
Sansa Stark: Alexis Dziena (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1232226/)
Catlyn Stark: Liz Vassey (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0890808/)
Petyr Baelish: Sam Neill (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000554/)
Robert Baratheon: David Ogden Stiers (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001773/)
Stannis Baratheon: Timothy Omundson (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0648486/)
Viserys Targaryen: Callum Blue (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0089485/)
Gared of the Black: Bruce Spence (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0817748/)
It's been so long since I've read the series that I cannot for the life of me put actors to the characters. This is greatly disappointing.
I like your choices, CB, though I'm not sold on Alexis Dziena's age as compared to Sansa's, and all I can think of is "DIABETUS" for Wilford Brimley.
This thread is a winner.

Why did you both pick brunettes for superblond Daenerys Targaryen?

Same for me. But I'll wrack my brain a little and see what I can come up with. I'm so flippin' excited about this series.
Please prevent Shia Lebeouf from being in any more movies, he's terrible.

They have these wacky things called dyes and bleaches, dunno if you've heard.

After the utterly revolting fail that is "The Legend of the Seeker", I am SO unexcited by turning yet another one of my favorite fantasy series into a made-for-TV schlockfest.
How about instead of making a TV series out of the books, YOU FINISH THE ****ING BOOKS, GEORGE.

It could be good, right guys? Right? ... Guys?

^ THIS.
He's putting out series-branded stuff everywhere and just keeps pushing the date back; pretty frustrating for a reader. I am losing hope that the series will be complete by the time he dies. I do, however, still have pretty high hopes for an HBO series. Perhaps if it becomes popular he'll get the fire under his ass that he needs, it's pretty obvious that fans alone cannot ignite him.

Actually, I always pictured Daenerys as a brunette. The stories are so long that I eventually forget each character's original description.

I've only seen the first episode of Legend of The Seeker, but I don't think it's all that bad... I mean it's not incredible, but it's better than most TV fantasy series. ahen... Xena... ahem...
Also: The Fire and Ice series is going to be HBO. They've done some very good TV in the past.

And many brunettes, especially Kristen Kruek, would look TERRIBLE blond, especially the superblond that Daenerys is supposed to be. I cannot see Natalie Portman as a blond either.

I mostly picked movie actors because that is all I could think of. Screw the actuality of your choice happening, have fun with your cast! I picked Shia as Robb because he ends up failing pretty hard, and Shia fits that role pretty well.
Wilford Brimley as Tywin;D that would be hilarious!
I am going to have to agree with Brian, we need the next book George! Get cracking!
Edit//
I also think Ali Larter would be a good Cersei. If the show had an epic makeup artist, CB could play all the different maesters in the book.

At least it's being made by HBO. They're less likely to screw it up than the random network that took over the Legend of the Seeker. *Shudder* God that is SO TERRIBLE. IT makes me cry hot little tears of rage and frustration.
HBO gives it hope. If it was a Sci-Fi production it'd be doomed.

I've never met a Sci-fi original I didn't like.
