View Full Version : Copy to disk or jump stick

Working in Quick Books and need to back up to a disk or jump stick. Each time I browse for a file to save the back up too, it tells me that I have to insert a disk, which I have.

Need help please.

So it's got nothing to do with Quick Books then if you can't view the disks even from windows natively. I'd suggest testing your jump stick in another computer if you have access to one. I'd also suggest testing other USB devices in different ports on your machine to make sure your USB ports are working.

If you are trying to backup to floppy drive, could be a bad drive or bad floppies. Floppy's and the drives for them are horrible at going bad from dust and just general use.

Outside of those issues though. You should also be able to back up your Quick Books to your harddrive and then burn that backup to a cd.

My husband took the jump stick and tried it on his computer. It brought up old data from last year. So the stick is good. I tried the stick in several outher ports and that did not work.

I have Quick Books on hard drive - backed up to hard drive but can't burn a cd or copy to anything.

Is there a test to see if the USB is working?

Well if you have a USB mouse you can test it in various ports, that's about the simplest USB device that should work without any issues on any machine. Beyond that you can look in the device mangers properties and see if you have any errors for your USB devices. Then there is the usual of making sure that all your drivers and service packs are up to date etc...

While we are on the subject of service packs what version of Windows are you using?

Windows 2003...where to I find the device managers properties? Will check with the mouse. Went to view and came up with a free download of regcure..is this a viable program?

go into control panel then device manager.

Never heard of regcure, but a quick google search leads me to believe it's crap. If you want a registry clearner/scanner I'd recomend ccleaner.

found it. went to troubleshoot but it does not discribe what is going on with my computer.

Troubleshooting your device won't help. When you looked in device manager were all the categories minimized with + signs beside them or were any of them expanded? If any of them were expanded that usually means you've got a driver missing.

Did you have a chance to check a usb mouse in any of the ports yet?

The above were subcatogories of the device manager no plus or minus.

Mouse is not a usb mouse

Troubleshooting your device won't help. When you looked in device manager were all the categories minimized with + signs beside them or were any of them expanded? If any of them were expanded that usually means you've got a driver missing.

Those are all card readers for flash media. You need to test the USB ports with some other non-drive device, like a mouse or a printer.

Can't find the thread after this but I believe you asked if I can use the USB with another device. I have a Cricut, which is a cutting device used for crafts. It allows me to hook up to the computer and plug into their program. I use a USB with this. Is this what you were inquiring about?

Yeah basically just test any usb device to see if it works.

The Jumpstick is likely fine. The problem is that the USB ports are underpowered for that jumpdrive. Do you know if you have USB1 or USB2 ports? If you look back in the Device Manager list under the Universal Serial Bus heading it'll show you the various USB hubs and it will typically identify them as either USB or USB2. If you don't have a USB2 bridge that could be part of the problem.

Another possible work around if it's a USB power issue is to get a powered USB hub, they only cost around $14 and that may solve your problem, but I can't guarantee it.

Now back to your original problem you also said you can't burn cd's. What happens when you try and burn a cd? Is it a lack of software or that you don't have a cd burner?

It has been a long, LONG time since I used QuickBooks, but the last time I used it ONLY supported flopppy drives for backups. No hard drives, no jump drives, just floppies. Might this still be the case?

I had copied it to a disk once and now it is not functioning properly. Can't figure why it won't copy.

Yes I'm an IT specialist and generalist to boot.

Ok so if you only have a USB root hub and no USB2 hub's then that's very likely the reason why it's not reading your jump drive. How old is this computer and is it a brand name one or just a piece built machine?

If you can burn to cd from outside of Quickbooks that's good news. You should then be able to backup your quickbooks to a harddrive and then burn that backup to CD.

I should have asked this many messages ago but while we are at it which version of Quickbooks do you have?
