Not sure if this is the right forum - but here goes

For a few teachers we setup shared folders so students can get assignments (read - only) --- and others that are drop boxes write only.

All students login as student and we have a user named student. In general this has worked fine. We had a new teacher this year and some confusion in setting up her share(s). Now we have some student files / folders that cannot be opened even if I'm logged in as admin at the server --- or logged in as staff which has admin rights. What gives ?

Any pointers on setting up shares - links etc.

I should mention we're at service pak 4 --- and when trying to open SOME of these student files as admin - I get a access denied / permissions warning

You probably messed up when creating the folder and deleted the administrator user permissions and left only a student read only file access. You should be able to fix it by doing this:

Right click the folder and open Properties
Switch to the Security tab
Click Advanced
Switch to the Owner tab
Select the Administrators group (or other as appropriate)
Check the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects box
Click OK and allow Windows to reset file ownership
