How do i do this?

hey guys, i have recently bought a new Abit NF7-S v2 with an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (barton core). the only bad thing is that i still have to use my Kingston value ram 512mb ddr333 (stable at 2-3-3-7). I am gona try and overclock a littel and see were i can go with it, but, i have a question. To overclock do i just increase the FSB on the cpu? or do i also have to increase the speed on the memory as well? which is the best and most efficient way of doing this... thanks again. - BaLLeR

P.S. i am running the retail Heatsink/fan for now which is keepin the cpu at around 41-44C.

I can't help it...gah...stock heatsink bad!!!
If you're going to OC at all you need a heatsink that will keep your CPU at 50-55C at a heavy load (if not well below that) and the stocker's not designed to do it.
The first thing you should look into is getting a new HSF that will be adequate for OC'ing by keeping your CPU from breaking a sweat.
Remember for every 10C added to your CPU you'll cut it's life expectancy roughly in half.

also since your ram is DDR333, you might want to consider using one of the other multipliers for the ram timing (5/6 is the best one there in this case) if you get the FSB up high enough.

it's pretty strait foward if you know what all the settings do, but feel free to ask anythign people with help, they've definitly helped explain everythign to me in the past

uh ha, thats it the divider, 5/6? i dont understand what it does. o and does fsb/memory clock synchronization matter when o/cin? and what do u mean by gettin the fsb higher? thx (i hope im not bein to much of a noob)

Yes. But there are quirks to the dividers. Some people find 4/4 is faster than 1/1, and others 3/3 faster than both 4/4 or 1/1.

Oops. Apparently they're still unlocked! How fortuitous! I thought that the 2600s were locked from the beginning - Newegg still has the brown packaging shown on their site, and I just bought a 2600. w00t.

Huh I thought all Bartons produced after week 39/03 were locked?

not all but most are ...after week 40 they became locked but now and then one pops up unlocked.
on another note ...prices should be dropping soon ...maybe this week.

It is a jiuhb dut3c, it should have some potential.
If I cannot get it as high as I want it, I might go get myself a Barton.
I hope the coming price reduction will reduce the prices here in Denmark as well.

I agree ...if I were building a new system today it would probably be P4 ...the FX processors haven't matured and come down in price enough for me yet.
For now I'm happy with what I have.
To tell you the truth I'm not sure if 2800's 3000's and 3200's are locked ...I haven't heard of any that are locked actually.

All 2500+ are locked after week 40 (at least the 30+ i have seen). That's all we have proof of. On the other side, i have never seen a "newer than week 40" 2600+ Barton.

When ever i turn on my comp it tells me that i am running at DDR333 (Abit NF7-S running at regular clock setings), when ever i overclock my fsb to like 170 it tells me that i am running at DDR340 and i only have ddr333, does this mean that the fsb and the memory are still running Synchronized?

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes - if you look in BIOS and the CPU/FSB setting is something like 1/1, 3/3, 4/4, etc, then you're definitely set to run synch.

If it's set to auto, then the ram should run at its rated speed. But it says DDR340 at boot, so I'm confused.

If it's set to auto it'll run at spd at a rate of 1-1 which in your case is DDR333 but when you raise the FSB to 170 the ram will follow the FSB to 170 which will give you DDR340.
If you had DDR400 the ram would default to the spd rate of DDR400 and the divider that allows that setting would be used (4-3? 5-4?) so when you raised the FSB to 170 the ram would end up going up at that multiple as well which would give you an ever higher ram rate.
Something on the order of DDR420 or so if my quickie in my head math is right.
