Help, AVG's gone all weird on me!

Sorry if this is a little unclear, I'm not a genius when it comes to computers.

I tried to uninstall it a couple days ago and it wouldn't so I went to delete the program files, and I thought I had, but I kept getting this when I turned on my computer. http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr128/Laina1312/Whatonearth.jpg

While I was trying to deal with that, my computer was superquick to freeze. I could literally be doing one thing and it's freeze up so badly I'd have to restart it. Also, I was having issues with downloading things (a couple things I thought might help, not music or anything, I'm not dumb :P) Today I tried to delete the files again so I could download a trial of Kaspersky (I'm going to switch to it, but I want the trial until then), and AVG refused to uninstall and I deleted all but one, but the Kaspersky trial still wouldn't install, saying AVG was still installed, so I used safe mode to try to uninstall the AVG. I got a message that said something like the files no longer existed and would I like to remove it from the list of programs. I said yes, obviously, and then tried to install the Kaspersky again, but it still said AVG was there.

Anyways, I tried reinstalling AVG to remove it, and after it annoyingly froze a few dozen times, I got it installed through safe mode. When I restarted, I got a message saying something hadn't installed properly and to enter some licence number thing, but it was AVG free, so I don't know what it was talking about and just clicked close.

In my control panel, I tried to install AVG, it's just not in the list of programs, so I tried the avg removal tool, and it wouldn't download. It'd say it was saving, but wouldn't open and wasn't in the file I tried to save it to. THEN I tried using Revo Uninstaller and it not only doesn't list it in the list of installations, but when I try to use the Hunter Mode thingie, it says, "No Installation Package Found! Tip: Get more information for the application from the main windows and try to uninstall it manually! C:\Program Files\AVG\avgui.exe". When I tried to open the AVG thing, it says, that the program no longer exists, and asks if I want to delete the shortcut. Then when I tried to install Kaspersky again, it STILL says AVG is on my computer and to uninstall it.

I'm sorry that's so long and rambly, but... HALP??? Oh, and I have Vista 32-bit, on a Toshiba, and I got it in late September of 2008.

Wow, that's really something else.

The AVG uninstaller tool is your best bet. Since you said you couldn't it to download properly, I've downloaded it for you and added it as an attachment to my reply here.

If Thrax's file doesn't help you, consider this.

Back up your important data before doing anything else. What you need to do is go into the Registry and remove the AVG entries. The Registry is serious business and removing the wrong things can mess up your computer so be careful and do it at your own risk.

Dunno how it works in Vista. I don't run it, but here's how things work in XP.

Go to Start -> Run -> and type in "regedit" without the quotes and hit Enter.

Regedit will open.

Click on the file tree on the left side of the window and select HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Go to Edit -> Find -> and type in "AVG" without the quotes.

It will bring up AVG's registry entries. Delete them, then hit F3 to find the next one. Remove them from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, then move on to the next main selection on the tree doing the same thing until Regedit cant find any AVG entries.

When I try to open it, there comes up the window that says, "You have chosen to open this file" like always, I chose save, save it to a file, and then like a second later it says it's done and then when I go to the file I tried to save it to, there's nothing there.

Firefox, and yup, no change.

Opening freezes it. It didn't show up when I tried to save it.

I think you might have bigger problems than just AVG.

Sofia, do you know how to get into Safe Mode? Likely you'll have better luck trying these different steps in Safe Mode.

Safe Mode is a viable option to be able to work out some of the issues,

Perhaps a restore session is in order? Roll it back a few days before you started messing with it?

Yes, I know how. Ahhhh, I don't want to do a system restore. Ah, well, I'll try that later, then. Hey, do you guys know how to set it back like a week? It's been acting weird for a few days now.

If you have system restore turned on, depending on how it's set up you should have that option. It'll ask you to select a restore point. Click through the calendar and find one that suits.

It's just normal vista, default. I don't change things very often. :P I've done it before, but usually I don't get the option because I do it through start up repair. So thanks! :)

You might also consider install Ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour/1-after-installation) and running the "Cleaner" application. Ccleaner is freeware and is excellent. It will run in Windows normal and Safe Mode. It works well in Vista.

I'd rather not play around in the Registry. I forgot about CCleaner.

If a registry error is causing the problem, running its simple registry cleaner should help.

Only problem with that is I still can't download. :P Ah, well, I'll restore later.

Yeah, a simple roll back to before you messed with AVG might get you back to normal.

The manual registry edits advice is sound, but its a little risky if your not too comfortable with computers.

I still can't downloadI think you can. You know how you get into Safe Mode by pressing F8 then selecting "Safe Mode?" After F8 when the options screen appears, select "Safe Mode with Networking." Any AVG components will be off but your Internet connection should be on.
