Not sure if it's infected

Here is the scoop - I am running Windows Vista with IE7. When I open a new tab - instead of the "you have opened a new tab etc..." message - I get a search box. I did find something saying "Fast Browser Search" and removed it but I still have this strange search box.

Hi,

Please do the following...

1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.


Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to

Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply


If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
C:\\Documents and Settings\\Username\\Application Data\\Malwarebytes\\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\\Logs\\mbam-log-date (time).txt



2. I need to see another log from HijackThis.

Run Hijackthis.
Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
Next click on Open uninstall manager.
Press the Save list button.
Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

1. Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

2. Download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp)

3. Open HijackThis
- Click the Do a system scan only button
- Check the following entries (below)

If you don't need popcap.com in your Trusted Zone, check the following box.

I'm not sure what's causing that, but you can try this:


Open IE
Go to Tools > Internet Options
Under General and Tabs, click Settings

Click Restore Defaults

You could try changing the location of where the new tab opens, if you wanted to.


Open Internet Explorer and go to Internet Options.
Click the General tab, and then, under Tabs, click Settings.
In the Tabbed Browsing Settings dialog box, do one of the following:


In Internet Explorer 8, click the list under When a new tab is opened, open, click Your first home page, click OK, and then click OK again.
In Internet Explorer 7, select the Open home page for new tabs instead of a blank page check box, click OK, and then click OK again.

Interesting - made no difference whatsoever! First I clicked restore default settings. Then I checked the last button - Open home page.... No change. I also noticed that when I got back to the main Internet Options page - the apply button was not lit.
