Shwaip - hair's just a touuuuuuuuuch out of focus. Could have used some more DoF to get all of the hairs in the front in focus, then leave the back out of focus. Color, framing, background all good.

Maru - good job moving the light. Top/backlighting is a good look for this shot. It came out a little cool on top and thus blue-shifted; you can warm that up in post if you want to give it a softer look. Framing's a little off - the right of her head is cut off, which distracts and tries to lead you out of the picture. Otherwise very nice! :)

It is hard to focus when you cannot look through the viewfinder. Smaller aperture would have made it easier, fo sho.

Psh. I've posted pictures of my eye and my tongue. You either set manual focus and a higher aperture or fix your AF point and make sure you're positioned right on it. Don't stop until you get the focus you want!

i read a tutorial on how to adjust white balance (I think thats what you guys are talking about with temperature references) and tried my hand at it.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/40153539@N08/3824304048/" title="ColorCorrected by vertatle, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2407/3824304048_7f4d7b1ca5_m.jpg" width="219" height="240" alt="ColorCorrected" /></a>

I think im still in need of refining my taste in post-processing, so is this better or too warm? Is there something I should look at to check if i have gone "too far" or is it just something to keep building up by practice?

Nah, that's not even close to too warm. You'd get a nice yellow tone to it if you were getting actually warm. This might actually still be a little cool, but it's much better - more white, almost no blue left.

As far as going too far, it's partly a taste thing - sometimes you want a blue or yellow cast - but otherwise, you just have to judge it based on what you're seeing. You took the picture, so you have some idea of at least what one color looked like under that light. Your eye does automatic white balance, so try to remember what you saw then and match that.

snark, just out of curiosity, how do you pronounce "maru?"

Snarkasm

The traditional Japanese way, of course :p

MAH-roo

It's my little compromise between not calling you your real name and not writing out Marushka all the time. ;D

Think of it as a term of endearment - you're almost as cool as Maru the cat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfGOlEizUUs&feature=fvsr)! :p

Your e-dawn or my e-dawn? We're like 9 hours apart here. This will never work.
