I have discovered that the KT400A Chipset will not support AMD 400FSB processors even though the boards themselves may be capable of setting 400 FSB by the BIOS or by DIP switches.
One motherboard manufacturer confirms that this is not the fault of the motherboard but that of VIA.
Presently the KT400A chipsets support up to AMD 300+ 333 FSB processors. An AMD 3200+ 400 FSB processor was unable to boot on two KT400A chipset boards. It would boot at a 166 (333) setting.
KT600 motherboards due on the market very soon allegedly support the 400 FSB processors like the AMD 3200+.

I specifically remember them producing the KT400A so that it would support the 400FSB. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.
At least my next board will be a nForce based

And as Al Kaline, announcer of the Detroit Tigers used to say:
"And it's loooooooooooooooooong goooooooooooone."
Such is VIA.

MM I thought you said that in a review or something you did on a Kt400A board. It offers a lil bit of improvement but its pretty much worthless compared to nForce2.

I don't think those were my exact words. :) The KT400A chipset hasn't impressed me. If it is meant to compete against NFORCE2...it doesn't but remember the scores are very close.

Via said all along that the KT400A would only support DDR400 memory speeds, but not FSB400.
The (now in production) KT600 will support FSB400 along with DDR400

NF2 > KT600 > KT400a > KT400
The KTxxx series are still good boards however. You can't find a NF2 board with an HPT Raid Controller unfortunately.

DFI added RAID 1.5 which is the best of both worlds Raid0 and Raid 1.

yeah i know, i bought a dfi lanparty kt400a mobo, and i found out that it wouldnt support the 400 mhz fsb, so i had to buy a athlon 3000+ insead of the 3200+, no biggy though, it saved me like 100 dollars, but the fact that dfi included the raid 1.5 capabilities made up for that
