I made a "diffuser" out of a sheet of printer paper and 6 staples, and taped it to my 430exII flash. I connected it to my camera with my ettl cable. I tweaked the flash's power (metered flash was too weak, full power over exposed everything) until it looked like that.
And yes, I do indeed have the beard.
I would have liked to be able to isolate myself from the background more (maybe shoot outside) so the only thing lit was me with a black background behind me.

here was mine. I would have liked to play more with different lighting ideas since snark gave me such great ideas but time is starting to run short. I decided to take a pic of the lamp that is forced to light my entire room.

I like it a lot. The white balance. The detail in the lampshade (esp. at large size). Just the overall pic is great.

wow thank thats really nice! Staring at it, I could have done a lot of quick things to make it better, like move the clutter out of the way.
