View Full Version : The Icrontic 100
One of our local radio stations is counting down the top 1019 songs of all time for Labor Day. Many radio stations do a Labor Day countdown as a way to mark the end of summer. I thought we could do the same here. Thus, forthwith, and heretofore, I present to you:
The Icrontic 100:rockon::Rocker:
The rules are simple:
- Your favorite 20 songs by 20 different artists. No repeats! Let me clarify. No repeat of the same artist on your own list. It's the Top 100, people have to choose some of the same songs otherwise how am I going to tabulate votes?
- Order is not important.
- Any genre is acceptable.
- A solo recording from an artist who normally records with a band is okay. For example, you can put a Cream song and an Eric Clapton song.
- In the event of a tie, songs will be chosen at random.
- Please email your submissions to me at kwitko (at) gmail (dot) com
- The deadline for entries is Sunday, Sept 13 at 11:59 PM.
- No Britney Spears songs!

No Brit Brit? That's like half my library you just trashed. Guess it's time to go find some good music. :grumble:

When I get home from work and ponder over my submissions, I will add them here.

- Thee Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band - Sisters! Brothers! Small Boats of Fire Are Falling From The Sky!
- Alaska in Winter - Horsey Horse [Remix Version]
- Beirut - Elephant Gun
- Explosions in the Sky - What Do You Go Home To?
- Five Iron Frenzy - Every New Day
- Handsome Furs - What We Had
- Muse - Stockholm Syndrome

...truth be told: Beethoven, Ninth Symphony; Saint-Saens, Organ Symphony; Berlioz, Symphonie Fantastique; Vivaldi, The Four Seasons; Bach, Prelude and Fugue in D minor; Richard Strauss, Also Sprach Zarathustra; Rachmaninoff, Piano Concerto No. 2; Sibelius, Finlandia; Stravinsky, The Firebird Suite; Gershwin, Rhapsody in Blue; Dvorzak, New World Symphony; Tchaikowsky, Violin Concerto; Debussy, L'Apre`s midi d'un faune; Gabrielli, brass and organ works (various)...(never have the time to sit still long enough to listen to the masterworks)
There's no way I could make a real top-20 favorites list for popular or classical, but I gave it a good effort.

That's gonna take me way too long to decide. I'll probably just end up copying the top of my last.fm playlist. Nevermind, I'll probably end up wasting a couple hours I could be using to do something productive. If I had to rank them that would take all day. This is the perfect way to try out my new headset.
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
UNKLE - Rabbit in Your Headlights
Eminem - Sing for the Moment
U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
Weezer - Perfect Situation
Coldplay - The Scientist
Kansas - Dust in the Wind
Radiohead - Creep
Hum - Stars
The Pixies - Where is My Mind?
Blink 182 - Adam's Song
The Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight
Staind - It's Been A While
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
Our Lady Peace - One Man Army
Blur - Song 2
Everclear - Father of Mine
Linkin Park - Crawling
Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood
Brand New - Jesus Christ
Don't count my list right away. I'll probably edit it a million times over the next 24 hours. I tried to fit a little Moonlight Sonata or Requiem in there but I couldn't find room. Also, I can't stop listening to Genesis by Justice, this is crazy.
PS: Thrax and Leo have the musical taste of 50 year olds. There's no way Point of Know Return is better than Dust in the Wind, go get your ears checked out.
(Reserved spot)
Leo, this may (or may not) surprise you, but we're music twins. I listen to every group/artist you listed on a regular basis.

Anyone else count 19 songs on Leo's list? Reserving No. 20 for what is truly my favorite tune, if I can ever decide.Leo, this may (or may not) surprise you, but we're music twins. I listen to every group/artist you listed on a regular basis. I am honored. Wait...you actually listen to Jethro Tull! I thought there were only a handful of us left who know about that group. ;DFatcat, you are welcomed to run the playlist on any roadtrip with me. Your list is outstanding. Also, your Rolling Stones pick is definitely their best art. That's what I wanted but couldn't remember it.
Update: Kwitko, thanks for a great thread. I went over to Rolling Stone (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5937559/the_100_greatest_guitarists_of_all_time/14), and started sampling tunes from their Top 100 Guitarists of All Time. I added my list - edited my previous post, so scroll up and read!
I've almost certain I'm going to have the most obscure list here. Which means most of my tunes probably won't see the final 100.
Now, critiques:
Leo and Thrax, I second that statement. I believe when it comes to classic rock, you guys are right in line with my tastes.
Poofie - Move to Bremerton by MxPx?!?!?! YESSSSS! I thought I was the only MxPx rocker in these parts. Excellent!
Lincoln - Song no one's heard of? Kingpin and I used to sing that song all day long in Jr. High. Loved it. Thanks for the nostalgia.
Kryyst - good picks. Nice to see some metal.
Shwaip - Fleet Foxes, well done, I approve.
This thread is awesome. I'm glad I sat down and picked a top twenty.
I frigging love music.
Harry Chapin - Cat's in the Cradle
I had this on my list, and it is a most excellent song choice, and even though I love the song, I hate it at the same time. Sometimes you can't ever let things go....

I also had to fight myself and my urge to put Modest Mouse - Cowboy Dan on my list. I love that song, but I don't think I could hold it up to a all time favorite.
I'm telling you man, it's all about old Modest Mouse. It really was a flat-out impossibility to pick one song from them, though I knew it was going to be an old song, so I just ending up picking "Dramamine" quickly because I knew I would equivocate forever if I didn't. But seriously, with Isaac Brock throwing out lines like "We kiss on the mouth but still cough down our sleeves," who couldn't pick it?
By the way, "Cowboy Dan" is Nick's favorite Modest Mouse song.
"Cowboy Dan's a major player in the cowboy scene
He goes to the reservation drinks and gets mean
He goes to the desert, fires his rifle in the sky
And says, "God if I have to die you will have to die"
*Cowboy Dan is one mean son of a you-know-what.

Hey, I was this close to throwing in some Nightwish, glad you did it for me.
Plus, I think I'm the only one that's thrown in some post rock and avant-guarde in my list.
Kwitko - Can you tell me when you download my songs? I need to pull it from my dropbox and upload a larger file for another friend.
Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand (Fatcat swiped Kashmir from me)
You're allowed to pick the same song as someone else, you can't pick the same artist twice on your list. In fact, your list can be 100% the same as someone else's.

Yeah, we talked a bit about that song when I was up there two weeks ago. I frigging love lonesome crowded west, and Cowboy Dan. I really wanted to put it on my twenty, but honestly I didn't really pick up and listen to that album until about 6 months ago (despite you giving me the album a year ago). But yes, old modest mouse, unbeatable.

I almost picked "Please Do Not Go" purely for its lyrical value which makes makes me laugh every single time I hear it, but I had to go with "Kiss Off," so sorry. "Add It Up" was the next one in line for me.
I didn't mean to come off as possessive :P I'm just glad someone else listens to Violent Femmes and picked something other than "Blister in the Sun."

I listen to their self-titled album, "Add it Up," "Why Do Birds Sing?," and "Hallowed Ground" pretty religiously. "New Times" is the only album I haven't listened all that much.
Their self-titled album is definitely my favorite, but the others are all fantastic (and you're right, it is nice to find someone listing something other than "Blister in the Sun." (and I mean no offense to whoever did list it, because it is a fantastic song!)

I also admit I took my nieces to see the Hanna Montana movie and actually liked that Miley Cyrus song. Shoot me for having a bond with my nieces. I can't hate ALL the songs they like... so I have one I like.

I didn't even think about big band until lunchbox posted. Oooohhh... And classical, also. You can't really nominate symphonies and concertos for a party. One of my favorites is Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It's an hour and a quarter long.

I had a really hard time picking my Beirut song. I was stuck between A Sunday Smile, Elephant Gun, Nantes, and Rhineland. I don't know why I like Rhineland so much, but it's always been one of the go-to's for me.

"Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts" is my second favorite song on the album, just behind "I'll Believe in Anything." Between the three of us (You, Bobby, and myself) we're making quite the solid Wolf Parade/Sunset Rubdown/Handsome Furs voting block, which is friggin' awesome because Spencer Krug and Co. deserve it. Cherplunka, I figured it out. I don't remember the film (working at a theater for four years, you see lotsa movies), but I know there's a scene where Will Ferrel is singing dust in the wind at a funeral. it's a painfully off-key arrangement, but it's not a maraichi band.

Lots of honorable mentions like The Postal Service, Death Cab, The Crystal Method, The Human League, The Clash, New Order, Goose, Rage Against the Machine, The Talking Heads, and some were omited because of duplicates, like Blur, Radiohead, Cake (Think its funny how loving Cake is universal). Plus I almost entirely disregarded genres like Punk or Classic Rock. Screw it I can't work on this any longer. Suffice to say this would be the playlist as I see it today.
My former-self, and my future-self would be disappointed in me though.

So, ten years later, perhaps I've finally finished my list (which I've lost like...17 times). I'll probably want to change the list in about five minutes, too. Please note that a lot of the songs are more recent because back in the day before I learned about nifty things like portable hard drives, I lost my music library about three times. The list would also be very, very different if we were including soundtracks, classical stuff, and musicals. Don't judge me too much! Heh.
1.) All American Rejects- Move Along
2.) Oasis- Wonderwall
3.) Death Cab for Cutie- Marching Bands of Manhattan
4.) Bon Jovi- It's my life
5.) Aqualung- Strange and Beautiful
6.) Something Corporate- Konstantine
7.) Jack's Mannequin- Bruised
8.) Sufyan Stevens- Chicago
9.) Linkin Park- Crawling
10.) Chevelle- The Clincher
11.) Muse- Sing for absolution
12.) Copeland- The Grey Man
13.) Imogen Heap- Hide and Seek
14.) Lost Prophets- Last Train Home
15.) Frou Frou- Let Go
16.) Snow Patrol- Run

If you only watch one of the videos I linked up there, watch hers (#7). Holy cow, I've heard that song before and never knew who it was. I love me some folk/celtic/world style music!
So I decided to give my 20 here afterall. I wanted to take my list in a somewhat different direction that what's been posted already. I tried to give a sampling of Southern California with my picks. I've represented Los Angeles (mostly "West Coast" Hip Hop, Rock), Orange County (Ska), and San Diego (Ska/Rock). The list is comprised of songs you're likely to find on the radio on any given station, even today.
It's hard to describe the laid back feel out here without having lived in one of the cities, particularly San Diego, but Ska and 'slower' bands (STP, Incubus) fit and describe the lifestyle here perfectly. Hopefully the sampling captures the heartbeat of the cities for you.
I've thrown in a few random favorites, too.
Don't Sweat the Technique - Eric B. & Rakim
My Life - Pharoahe Monch
Oh No - Mos Def
Hip Hop - Dead Prez
Got Yourself a Gun - NAS
Watch Me - Jay-Z
Nuthin' but a "G" Thang - Dr. Dre
Gangsta Nation - Westside Connection
It Was A Good Day - Ice Cube
Express Yourself - N.W.A.
California Love - 2Pac
Santeria - Sublime
Californiacation - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Learn to Fly - Foo Fighters
Sell Out - Reel Big Fish
Spiderwebs - No Doubt
Drive - Incubus
Gin and Juice - Snoop Dogg
Regulate - Warren G
Plush - Stone Temple Pilots
Edit: I realize the hip hop won't get any votes, but I'd really invite you to listen to the songs I picked. They're a far cry from most of today's stuff, and if you're into any sort of ambient vibe to your music I guarantee those will fit right in.

Edit: I realize the hip hop won't get any votes, but I'd really invite you to listen to the songs I picked. They're a far cry from most of today's stuff, and if you're into any sort of ambient vibe to your music I guarantee those will fit right in.
I've got hip hop in my list. The new Jay-Z album is sick!

... Marry me?
*laughs* Woot, marriage. That means cake. I like cake! Your list was awesome too. "Dirt" is a freaking great song and I very nearly put it down.

Hey Charshie, pleased to meet yah. I like cake too! Anyways...
NiGHTS, ever heard of the Grey Album? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zJqihkLcGc)
I have, Quady ;)
Agreed, Weezer - Blueprint 3 grew on me slowly, took me a few listens to really appreciate it. Empire State of Mind with Alicia Keys is great. I'm convinced Alicia is the female Nate Dogg - she instantly makes any track she's on better and has a great voice to compliment almost everyone.
