Been having a lot of thoughts drifting around in my head lately, about college, my job, and what I would like to do once I'm out of college. I would love to get some kind of job in the IT field, because well I love computers and it would be kick ass to get a job in a field for something I love to do.

Right now I'm working for a local isp in my town, we are expanding our business to the next town over, which is really good for the company and if I stick with the company, good news for me as far as my pay goes if the company really takes off.

Now what I am concerned about is that if I transfer in a year to a university about 40 minutes from where I live, I will have to get a new job and all that goes with living in a new city. And I just don't know if the IT field is really booming like it was back with the .com era was taking off.

I mean, I don't know how easy it is to get a job dealing with computers these days. And to be honest I don't know what profession I would like to go in. I thought about opening up another business for building computers, and doing computer repair, but that is so common these days around here it's hard to get established. Then I thought about becoming a network admin, or maybe a consultant of some type.

To be honest, I dont know what I want to do after I get out of college, and I would like to make my mind up now rather than later on.

The other career choice I thought about was real estate sales or some kind of investor, but I suck at math, so thats slim to none.

So I was hoping I could get some help from my fellow s-m members. What would be a good field to look into other than the IT field, as far as a good salary and something to retire from? And also, what other IT jobs can you think of that would do the same, that I haven't listed.

Any help would be great guys, I'm really confuesd right now, and don't know what to do.

From what I've seen and read over the last couple of years, IT jobs are scarce, mainly because so many people are trying to cash in on a "hot new career" that advertising does. These people can learn this stuff, and read it back to you after they've memorized it, but they may not have the desire to actually do this for a career. It's strictly for the money.

It's my opinion that managers are hiring based on good word. Connections. Experience always helps. Now, from what I remember, you sound like you're doing fine in IT right now working for that up and coming ISP. That's good experience, and every letter of experience in this field is worth gold. Grab what you can, and in 10 years, unless we have another major IT fallout like the dotcom scenario, you should be driving whatever newest model Mustang and living with leather-everything :p

Yes, as Templar said, experience and contacts go further than degrees and certs in this field. As it has always been, it's not what you know .........

Your experience right now is a gold mine. Get every minute of time in there that you can.

That is the one big reason that I took the job I have now. I knew that if I got a degree, maybe a certification here or there it would help. But I knew that some experience would be awesome to have. I'm really wishing that the company takes off and grows pretty big, so that I can grow with the company and learn as much as I can, maybe run one of the offices or something. But you are right Templar, IT jobs seems like they are thin to none these days. That was why I thought about a major change in college.
