You know, since S-M opened, I haven't had to play my Snopes card in a long time. Well, here we go (http://www.snopes.com/photos/surfer.asp). If you go to the photographer's website, you'll see that it is indeed a dolphin, as evidenced by the opening shot on his site.

It is not. You can clearly see in the picture that rear edge of the animal's dorsal fin is concave, and it's caudal fin is perpendicular to the body (it's oriented horizontally when the animal is right-side up)

Compare that to a great white shark (pic attached) which is one of a very small number of species that's likely to get big enough to be mistaken for a dolphin.

The shark has a clearly straight-edged dorsal fin, and a vertical caudal fin. There are no fish with horizontal caudal fins. So, the animal in the picture has to be a cetacean of some sort. Judging by it's size and appearance, I'd have to say it's a member of the family Delphinidae, the genus Tursiops, and the species truncatus.

It's a bottlenose dolphin, people.

:p :D

I agree... Its an orca, a baby one at that... its to big to be a dolphin. The length from the leading edge of the dorsal fin to the snout is waaay to long to be a dolphin...

Killer pic however....

I'll have to look when I get a chance (I'm on my lunch break now... I have to go back to school in 5 minutes) but I don't think it's wide enough to be an Orca.

maybe its just a long dolphin shaped orca. new species you know

Aside from the width you can pretty much discern the narrowing of the nose. Dolphin.

sharkI don't remember the picture at the start of this thread.

The one I do remember was a debate whether the "subject" was a shark or a whale. To be more specific, I think the argument was between a Great White Shark and a Killer Whale.

I had that picture somewhere. When I get home, I'll look for it.
