Dremel all the way! AMD rocks!
I'm awaiting use of my freind's digital camera, so in the meatime I'll have to explain my mods.
I've got 4 Antec blue LED fans for intake/exhaust, an Antec blue LED on my Alpha PAL 8045, silver braided rounded cables, a full-size window cutout with a custom decal that reads ÜberBlue with an AXP logo underneath.
I changed the green power and HD LEDs on the front to blue, and would like to replace the CD-RW and DVD LEDs too.
The big bummer is that the case is beige, not blue.
Might as well post my mod while I'm here. This was my first attempt at a dremel and plexi glass so it's not the best in the world, but it's mine damnit :D

I was going for a classy look to this mod... although nothing looks too classy in that craphole of a bedroom I've got. It's a Chieftec Mini-Mid tower with two 80MM LED fans in front, power and HDD LEDs changed to blue, and stealthed CD-RW drive. I also have the custom case badges my friends and I had made for Nexlia.com, our website, on the front. I've got a few more subtle mods on the way including front USB 2.0 ports, maybe a front firewire also, cut into one of the 3.5" floppy covers.

My current mod will be figuring out how to remove and replace the top case fan in my Lian-Li PC60+USB case since that fan is dying.
Not so much a mod as a serious lack of a budget, and thus, a case. Let me tell you, for $10 total, its definatly ghetto.
Is that your main rig? You better not bump your desk to hard, if so, your whole rig is coming to the ground. Better get to saving some money bud.

She is not done yet. I have to drill some holes for 2 40mm fans and then put it all together and make sure she is stable, PSU wise.
Consider the pic a teaser. An article should be out before the month is over, I will be moving to college in a month.

Well, I always like a good mod and I will be lookin forward to that article. Great work so far :D

Its a cheap Enermax case but it has plenty of fan holes! I yanked out the front USB and audio, the door in front of them, then hacked out the case with a kitchen knife. Mark of a folder? It didn't get turned off during surgery or for its portrait.
Inside, at front is a cheap 4-LED 120mm and waaayyy too long cables, then my shiny blue mobo and Antec 3-LED 80mm on an AOpen heatsink.
Yeah, thats not my main system, thats a quality pentium pro 200Mhz system pull that lost its case to something more worthwhile. I'd like to say that i have the motherboard actually mounted to that board...but its just sitting there.

Doesn't your hard drive and optical drive rattle or something?

Thats the most ghetto mod I've ever seen! :D

Well, no. They arent exactly high speed components, so that may be why they dont. At least the board isnt warped. Actually, I removed the CDROM drive and put it in another system...and the floppy.

Well, i think the ghettoness could be improved by duct taping the components on the board and mounting it vertically, but thats a little risky.
~dodo
Wouldn't it be funny if a house fly landed on your hs fan and got cut up? hehe I just thought about that. And yes, the ghettoness could be upped a level, but it looks plenty ghetto for me.

Thats pretty close to where the expression "bug" actually originated from actually...
Here is something you don't see on Compaqs. Extra fans! It's my brother's Compaq that I modded for some more air flow in its cramped case. The cables are wrapped with electrical tape, zip tied to the PSU, folded IDE cables, CoolerMaster HSF (I killed the OEM one with canned air  ), one fan on the rear, sticking out; and one beside the PSU blowing air to the HSF.
Here is my own. It's nothing spectacular. No windows and glowing LED fans. Just some low budget mods. I made 2 blowholes (side and top), enlarged the front intake, removed the stamped grill from the PSU, front intake, and rear exhaust. Homemade fanbus, folded IDE cables, and electrical tape wrapped cables zip tied along the case. It probably only cost me $30CDN.
Nice! Was wondering what that black contraption was on the bottom inside there!
Methinks your fingers would beneift from some kind of grill on those fans. :D And yeah, whats that black thing?
~dodo
The black thing on the bottom of my case is my homemade fanbus. As for grills at the back of my case, nah. No one is going to go to the back of my case except for me.

Gonna be modding my mouse and keyboard again after i finish exams june 27th,
heres just a few ideas i had for my mouse, pritty much know what i'll be doin with the keyboard
http://mickyh101.users.btopenworld.com/mousedesign.jpg http://mickyh101.users.btopenworld.com/mousedesign2.jpg
i'll just be drillin holes in a pattern and placing leds inside the mouse then maybe fill up the holes with a clear resin or liquid plastic, sanding it then to get a smooth finish
Not sure either whether to use blue or red leds, i'll be gettin loads for the keyboard mod so i huess i could try em both out and see which i like best :)

its a cheep ass mouse serial i've had since before i can remember so its not really gonna be a great loss if i mess it up but on the other hand if it turns out fine then i got a cool looking mouse
Well, my case is still in New Hampshire, so I can't take any pictures of it with our sweet new digital camera... I do have some pictures that I took with a 35mm while I was modding it.
Basically, I totally stripped this thing down and repainted it. The inside is engine compartment black and the outside is metallic blue. There are a bunch of other mods as well; fans, temperature probes, etc. All the drives got painted and the LEDs were swapped out for blue ones, but I don't have any good pictures of them at the moment.
These pictures are of the fan mods that I did...

No pictures of the R404A chiller with me at the moment, either. It's partially disassembled pending repair... And still in New Hampshire. At one point in time I had removed the fan from the blowhole over the CPU and had the insulated hose for the waterblock running out of it. Afterall... You don't exactly fit an R404A chiller in the case. It was, if I do say so myself, probably the slickest chiller setup I've ever seen... Short of putting the whole thing in a cabinet, like DeathStar's awesome watercooling rig.
Nice pictures and rig there DeathStar, thanks for sharing.

Holy smokes, how loud is that thing? And how much cfm you got flowing in that case.
Khaos
11 Jun 2003, 10:48pm
Well, I built a fan bus that controls all of the audible fans in the case because the noise started to get to me. LOL... So, it can be quiet... It can be loud, too. Very loud. Total CFM is between 600 and 800; I really can't say. I know it has gone up since I first built it because some of the 120's and 80's got replaced with higher powered models. I accidentally connected some wires wrong while I was rewiring the case and fried several of my fans. :D
That top blowhole pushes somewhere around 138 to 150 CFM all on its own. I forgot the specs of that particular fan - But I don't like it. Even when it's dialed down, it is still pretty loud for a 120MM.
Hey DeathStar, that thing IS folding for team 93, right?! ;) lol

Here's with the doors open, giving you a better idea of the cooling and general set up. The doors close with velcro tabs, was intended to be a temorary solution but has worked out fine.
Note that the hard drive cage is suspended from above. I got to final assembly before realizing that, in normal horizontal configuration, the HDs extended over top of the ATX (PS) connector. There was no joy in Mudville that night, just lots of cursing and pulling of (what's left of my) hair. I ended up hanging the HD cage from the case frame via 3 cable ties. They anchor it there quite fine, thank you kindly, they were a biotch to run but everything is quite stable. Never did get around to finishing up the cable stealthing but it's 98% and hardware keeps coming and going, I won't bother unless I have a show to enter it in or some such.

Must be the nicest Aopen case i have ever seen. Those cases are dang ugly in an original configuration. Nice mod!
Where is the pump and how do you fill/bleed? The hard way?
Eheim 1250 pump is on the upper shelf, furthest corner as you look at the pics - ie, behind the rad.
See the white container with the red top? Up on top of the case. That's actually a Lowry's Spice container that has been reworked into a reservoir. In the original configuration, I designed the system (in part) around the clear acrylic DD res. However, it cracked beyond repair and leaked after 45-60ish days, (no permanent damage) so I built my own to replace it.
Do your best to ignore the dust, ugh.

Thats a very good idea Keto. IF my rad is to be modded into the top, i will have a couple of inch of tube before the intake of the rad connected with a "Y" so that any air gets up there instead of the rad. I need to start digging holes on the plate of the MB first though. Extra caps underneath the MB makes it impossible to mount.

Just keep modding even when you think all has been done! I did the moulded fan mod. It was later labeled the BBQ FAN MOD :D It kinda looks like BBQ in the first PIC. Just think outside the box. I still have a few to share like my CPU DIE backside cooling!

I've sent side panels off to the big laser cutters to do designs. Aluminum cuts like butter...steel has a tendancy to melt during the finer cuts.
I also have enough neon in my PC cases to make it look like the Las Vegas Strip...just missing the hookers.
I've always had a hankering to put a PC into a stereo receiver unit. I think that may be my winter project to figure out how to make the buttons, volume knob, treble, bass etc work the audio and other such features.
I've seen Deathstar's monstrosity before. I remember it when it was being built, rebuilt, cabled etc. Deathstar knows forum life well.

when ever my stuff gets here, im gonna change that floppy mod and use either a servo or a solenoid to operate the door on it. i have a few ideas on how to do it, the only thing i havent totally ironed out is how to control or actuate it.
with the solenoid, i thought of maybe using a reed switch which is magnet activated, and then maybe mount a override somewhere in case im ever without a magnet....
ive also wondered if theres a way to run it via the serial port, and have some little proggy to do it.

I've already posted pics of this rig before but thought I'd move some to the official sticky. Also changed the water cooling color and a couple of IDE cables. The first one is from LANageddon, close to 300 gamers were there.
nice setup, how does that splitting the water between the cpu and gpu perform?
Trash80
16 Jun 2004, 4:28am
It works excellent. In fact I am quite certain my flow rates improved, offsetting any increase in water temperature from the CPU and NB combined. I dont have any hard data but have seen testing that proves this is a better way to cool CPU, NB & GPU, rather than putting them inline.
cool, i was thinking of doing that but wasnt sure how it would do.

Dude, that looks exactly like the computer of one of my friends ... like, exactly it. Weird :p
This is mine. I have a new EL round IDE cable in there now, which looks purdy. I need to replace the fans on the PSU, though. They're too loud (and I hate the sound of fans...). The only thing I wish I could do is mod/buy 90* connectors for the SATA cable and power. It'd look so much better. I'd also like to figure something out with that damn mobo power cable, but there's not a lot I can do there...
It's not really a mod, I suppose, other than the cable management. But still. I wanted to post it anyways ;D

well here are some pics of my system, hopefuly now that im out of school i can work on it some more. I would like to clean up some cables, buy a couple new parts and some paint on the inside. Also does anyone remember who painted their case with a silver coat first then with a light blue coat over it, so it looked like blue metal? i remember i really liked that look and would like to read agian on how he did it. hopefully you guys remember what im talking about.

My new PC, I call it Ammo Can. I carved it out of a mil. surplus 20mm ammo can. Hole saws for the fan openings, sabre saw for the straight lines, angle grinder for removing large amounts of material, and a dremel for fine detail work. Took a great deal of work to cut through all that steel, it's quite thick in places. In fact, the lid had a second layer of corrugated steel spot welded to it, I had to break each weld by hand and peel the metal off. Long, time consuming work. I could have left it, but it would have made mounting the DVD bracket more difficult.
Rig contains a DFI LanParty NF3 Ultra D mobo, AMD Athlon 3000+ 64 bit (yea, it's Folding) affixed to a slide out mobo tray taken from a cheap case. I drilled out the rivets that held the bottom rail into the original case and epoxy'd it into the ammo can. The mobo tray (with mobo attached) slides into the case and is held in place by the rail. Video card is just a BIT too wide, so I have to slide the mobo tray into the case, install the vid card, and slide it out just slightly to tighten the hex screw.
DVD is a 16X DL RW, and the bracket for it was also taken from the cheap case, and riveted to the lid of the ammo can.
HDD is a 160GB WD SATA drive, mounted to the side of the case with 2 screws (bottom mount). I wanted to use all 4 screws, but only 2 of them lined up when all was said and done. Electrical insulation between the case wall and the drive bottom is provided by two strips of duct tape (kinda ghetto, but I like to think it fits with the overall theme I got going here). Besides the tape is mostly hidden under the drive.
I am not completely done, as I need to install two military safety toggle switches (flip up covers) on the front for power and reset. I also need to dress/tie off/loom the internal wires. However, it is now up and running. Pictures below (sorry if they are too big/too many). Thank you.

No, I'm going to keep the drives and grills as is. I want it to look like a PC built into an ammo can, not a PC disguised as an ammocan.
And the grills, with red lights behind them (washed out by the flash) look SWEET as is.

Dig the ammo can! You're giving me ideas... :D
Here's a tiny mod I did to my Logitech MX700, the base is next. Quality is castrated for internet use, of course. :D
I'm not too happy with how the final product came out, not enough shine. I'd like it to jump out at you, so I'll be re-priming it with white paint first. The metal flakes should show up better on top of white, and the blue anodizing on top will be re-sprayed with a clear coat to give it a nice shine and prevent the paint from wearing thin in some select areas.
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/7179/untitled1tp.jpg
It looks better in real life, of course. The Magic mousepad is a gift from a friend who managed to make his way into e3 for me, I have no connections to the game nor do I have much patience for any in the fantasy genre, so don't ask. :D

It was suppose to be grey anyways! I bought the damn thing at CompUSA and they had all the same make/model with diff colors. One was beige, one was black and one was grey. I bought the grey one,but in small bold print it says "Color may vary." Now, why the hell would they put the color on the box and list it as grey but then give me a beige one...? Oh the morons at CompUSA! I've always had bad experiences with spray painting things...they usually get all sticky.

Oh, Believe me, It's taken a few yrs of saving up parts, trading, etc, to get them all. Not to mention every time I upgrade inlaws, brothers, friends pc's, I get the leftovers. As a matter of fact--I just got an AMD K6-2 550 box built by Vega, from inlaws. I built them a new one --AMD 1.2 T-Bird system. They just scan the net, write a few letters, fax once in a while, and play a few card games, so that works well for them.
Nice system Rivers. I haven't made the transition to 64 bit yet. Pic's look fine.
As for the sticky painting, I've got the cure bud.....Always use

Yeah, that was my original plan actually. The thumb screws were only supposed to be temporary as well. I was going to do some more work, including dremmling the center fan mounting tabs off the bix2. I've actually begun to contemplate going back to high-end air cooling, so I likely will not spend much more time on that rad.

Most likely, I had a lot of fun with the h2o, but I miss the simplicity (and silence, my setup is bloody loud) of air-cooling. It's a real pain any time I want to work on my rig. The temperature decrease really did wonders with my AthlonXP system and 9800 pro, but I'm just not seeing any gains with my A64/X850.

:D decided to test theory that as long as there is lots of air flow, you can garbage up the rest of the space . so there are 2 120 mm Silverstones blowing out the top, 1 Antec 120mm blowing out the back, the Antec PSU has its 2 fans blowing out, and there is 1 Antec 120mm sucking in through the front. the CPU fan is a 9bladed Silverstone.all fans have speed controls, but i have found that only the CPU fan has to be full power. all others are at lowest speed. then i added as much lights and uv sleeving as i could fit.
so, at highest settings in Doom3 or Far Cry, the CPU temp is usually around 40 and the GPU is around 60. one strange thing- if all exhaust fans are maxed, CPU temp drops, and GPU temp rises. i believe that is because there is so much CFM going out those 120 mm exhausts, that the GPU cooler(Arctic) can't force air out! i actually get to have a fairly quiet rig. ambient is around 22, idle- both CPU and GPU 30-32, normal useboth in upper 30's. i kind of like the cluttered look, and at night i can play games with no room lights, just the comps. lights :p

one question, where do you shove all of those wires. i even bought a modular psu and i still have a freagin mess. maybe my case is smaller then you alls, but prob not. its driving me nuts. Im also mad cause im so busy with hw that i have had no time at all to work on my bay bus.

Nice, clean look.
With my aversion for mixing water with electricity I prefer the multiple fan method. Noisy, granted. The Zalman fan probably isn't necessary but nice to have.

That's some serious Video Card cooling you have going on there, Winga.
yikes got some pretty hard core flex on that video card, might wanna consider some support, lift and separate.

Here is my comp, nothing special. I have the side panel off, its getting prep'd for surgery. :D I've bought some dremel bits and i'm ready to have at 'er. I'm planning a simple window, it's my first real mod so i'm checking, double and triple checking everything.
Right now, it has 3 white lazer LEDs that aren't strong enought to take pics of by themselves. The Zalman CPU and VGA coolers are both the LED versions and i have a blue cathode ready to go in.

i modded my OLD case from like 95 (cause i cant afford a new case, i just put my new system in a p2 case. so i painted it and put a few windows and extra fans in it. It doesnt look excelent, but it looks so much better than old grimmy beige.
I want to just do a complete new build, but im waiting for a new socket and backbone...jumping from 754 to m2 should be nice :D

Why thank you sirs!.. I tried to hide my wiring as best I could but we'll see how it turns out in other builds, it might be because this is my first build and i tried super hard. I just built a HTPC and i think the wiring is okay, i'll take pics tomorrow if i remember.

Not anything too extensive, kinda messy desk (not anymore though), and not a whole lot of detail on what's inside, but you can clearly see what is most visually important.

I lost the picts but for the 7600GTs in Sli I get 38C idle and 44Load. The chipset with the Swiftech cooler is never over 36C and the Cpu with the Aquagate was 30C idle 50C OCd, with the Hyper6+ the temps dropped to 27C idle and 45C OCd.(Opty 148 @2750mhz)
I am rebuilding it now and using a Zalman 9500 AM2 (I know its not as good as the Hyper but it looks Sooo cool)
The cooling is fantastic considering its almost silent. I think thats due to very good air management (air only has to travel 10" to be out of the case) and basically there is NO wires or HDD racks or fan grills to slow it down.
Another cool benefit is It hardly collects any dust. I am remodeling my house and there is Sheetrock dust everywhere. My folding comp (reg tower with a 80mm front and a 120 exhaust) needs to be cleaned every couple of days.
And thanks...

Is that power supply modular?
And is that armor case really that heavy like everyone says...
I will post my modded dell in a few weeks.... Lol and no I did not use dremel... One word: Goop
A full tower steel case? Hell yah its heavy. That case weighs 38lbs empty while the LianLi v1000 is about exactly the same size and weights less than half that.
its on the light side 45 pounds, I had to kind of balance it on my scale. I would say that is really close to being 50 pounds.

Well, I was bored so I decided to take apart my 360 and give it a new paint job!!! :D:D:D (Just started today so its not nearly done)
I put up one pic of the top side of the console with its first or second coat (can't remember which one it is right now) and a second one of the back side with part of the pic I want on it. When the back side is done the inside of the yellow circle area will be black and I am going to try and fix the bottom part of the visor because it just kinda flopped. The top side will have the cool 3 symbol that you see on the special edition case cover.
My first try at anything of the sort so. . . Any "constructive" criticizm is good.

Ok, I have finally finished! First 2 pics are of what the sides look like and the third I just threw in to show how it looks when I shove it in my messy corner.:D:D
Edit: I also freehanded some of it so that would be why a couple lines aren't quite straight. Also, the top side pic looks a little bit fuzy (doesn't look nearly that blurred *the camera sucks*)
