View Full Version : celeron vs dorun vs xp
I was looking around and found I can get brand new 2.4GHz Celeron for $75. Is it better to get a xp or duron compared to the price? Not doing for gaming just folding box and cheaper comp. for my mom
The Athlon XP 2500+ will spank the everloving hell out of that celeron.

Yep, for the price, you can get much higher performance with an Athlon XP.
Bud, go take a look at this article on Anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1927) which exactly answers your questions. A 1700+ basically beats the hell out of a celeron 2.6, the further up the XP ladder you go the worse the smackdown. :cool2:

Jim,
I think I can take that to the next level.
Intel= Craphell :nudge:
The Celeron is pretty much useless considering it's high price.
If you are considering a gaming rig the Celeron is out of the question.
It is an old dinosaur compared to other available processors.
Even the Duron kicks Celeron ass and is cheaper.
Go for an Athlon XP Barton 2500+ that delivers an unequaled price/performance ratio.
You can have a picture as well.

I'm a big fan of Durons. I've had two now, and my parents have another (all Morgan core). With an unlocked multiplier, they can run at 133 (or higher) FSB so the RAM bandwidth isn't an issue. If you can spare half the cache, they're great.
My old 1ghz Duron smoked a Willamette 1.7ghz P4 in folding. That amused the hell out of me. :D
yeah i was looking for a cheap system for my mom she doesnt game just e-mail and aol instant messenger. I might try a duron, anyone have a clue if there unlocked from newegg?

I believe they're all locked. If they're ceramic package, then it's an easy pencil-trick to the L1 bridges to unlock it. If it's organic package (like an Athlon XP), then I think connecting the L1's with window defogger repair or conductive paint will work, but I've not tried it. I'm not 100% on how the package differs in Durons from the Athlon XPs (in the organic case).
I did try to hard-code in a multiplier for a Duron using the same method one would use for a Palomino, but I failed. So either the method wasn't compatitble, or I screwed up cutting bridges (most likely the latter).
