I use AIM right now, but it does a lot of crap thats reaaaaally pissing me off (like playing advertisements with sound all the darn time). I've heard of trillian, but what are some other IM programs out there? They have to be compatible with file transfers/direct connect...

Just install DEAD AIM and it gets rid of all the annoying crap aim comes with and just leaves a plain, easy vanilla messenger behind.

AIM doesn't play any ads with sound for me... have you tried right-click -> Stop on them?

Most of it's other annoying features can be disabled in Options too... like the stock ticker, news, AIM today, and the mail notification.

Yep, that works well also :)

I've been playing with different ones, and Trillian is the only good one. it is compatable with all of AIMs features, but you must pay to get all of them ($25). Worth it in my opinion.

I stopped useing AIM the day they releases the ad for the ELF movie... That was really annoying, ya?

But then all you can connect to is the AOL network... if you want to settle for that, well who am I to stop you?

AIM plays ads with sounds?! I have never seen/heard one that has sounds with it. That would piss me off for sure.

I don't know of any other programs besides trillian... i guess there was this one but i can't remember the name now. It looked just like AIM but it had the nice feature of letting you keep different converstions in one window with a tab for each one... what was that thing's name?

//edit: ah yes, DeadAIM, thanks Al

Another neat feature for DeadAIM is the logging. I love being able to go back to a conversation, quote someone, and pour on the pwnage :)

AIMutation and AIM 5.2.3292 is by far the best, plus it's totally free. Removes advertisments, ads skinning, logging of everything, tabbed messages, it's a lot better than DeadAIM, middle_man, all those other mods for AIM, and even better than trillian just because trillian doesn't work with Direct IM and thats just stupid.

Global Instant Messenger is similar to Trillian in that you can use it with MSM, Yahoo, etc. I had less trouble with it. In the free version you do have to close one ad window on startup.

I use Trillian Pro 2.0, but I have a huge complaint about it. It seems as though half my MSN messages don't go through. People will message via AIM asking me why I haven't responded through MSN? Other than that I like it a lot. I was actually thinking of starting a thread just like this. Is there a different client for MSN besides...MSN :nudge:?

Trillian or gaim..... but i've had issues with GTK and copying and pasting correctly, but if i need something in a pinch, i got with gaim .63 (not the .7x series, i've had problems with crashing)

trillian, but i also dont like how you cant direct connect.

one complaint about deadaim - it doesn't seem to work with the newest versions of aim (for me) and it is also inable to stop aim ad sounds. it hides the ads, but i still get the sounds

You are very right! This works great so far. I had a little trouble finding that version of AIM (tried another version but the Mutation didn't work correctly) but I found it eventually. If anyone else was having trouble here's a direct link (http://www.etplanet.com/download/aim/download/AOL%20Instant%20Messenger%205.2.3292.zip). Is there anything similar for MSN? Trillian just isn't working out anymore.

It's worth it even without paying for it. What features are you using with pro version? I guess I must not be missing them :)

I have Trillian Pro and I use it to chat on Yahoo, MSN, AOL, Jabber, & ICQ without any problems.

The pro version is a bit less buggy, and it allows file transfers and direct connects, and stuff like that.

Although, my favorite feature of Pro may be that it allows you to minimize it to the systray, and then when others log in and out or go 'away' it will notify you with a little translucent box in the corner of the screen that fades away in a few seconds...

Those always interfere with games!!!

Does the new Trillian (2.0??) have tabbed windows? I NEEEED TABBEDZ WINDOWZZZZZ. I used to use Trillian 1.0 BUT it was buggy, windows would stick, crashed alot, some msgs didn't go through etc. If the new version is good I might switch back. So yeah, tabbed windows or no? Or is there a plugin for it? :nudge: :nudge: :nudge: :nudge:

Never tried Trillian, used to use ICQ back when it was in its enfancy, but I'm MSN Messenger all the way at the moment. Especially now they've sorted out all those NAT, ICS and what not issues.

Trillian sounds good though, at least for people who like multi-network functionality.

THere's a way to get rid of the ads in the offical AIM client alltogether, by replacing one file with another (learned how to do it back when that Elf ad started... GOD I hated that...) When I get the time I'll post directions.

Another vote for Trillian Pro. I mostly use it with the MSN Network though.
