I want to learn about hacking, how to do it, and how to stop it. First and foremost, I HATE CRACKERS! They destoryed our home recently, but I do believe that future things are going to be like in the movies when it comes to hacking, like Cowboy Bebop ;)

Anyways, I just wanna learn this, I have a couple books I am reading as is, but I always re-read a book to make sure I absorbed it as best as possible.

TIA, hopefully this is the right place to put this.

The politically correct way to say you want to learn about hacking is to say you want to learn about high level technology security :) hehe...

I HATE CRACKERS!

I thought someone would figure that out ;) But I do hate it when people call malacious crackers a Hacker, and when those script kiddies call themselves an "uber 1337 haxxor" as if they actually know anything about it. Of course joking about it is ok ;)

Right now I am at Amazon.com and have "The Prince" and "Sun Tzu's Art of War" in my shopping cart ;) I just need 13 bucks worth more of stuff to get free shipping.

As far as security books, The steal this computer book really isn't a good series, I have the 2nd edition and it sucks bad. I don't know about the hacking exposed series though. How about This (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1931836876/qid=1057120206/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/103-8842545-7527868?v=glance&s=books) book?

I have also been curios about the art of war book to, let me know how it is.

Want to hack?

You've two prerequisites to be a successful and quality hacker:

1) Learn linux/unix
2) Learn C++

Real hackers write their own programs. K?

It seems this site has translated the Art Of War and has posted it on the internet.

I don't know any books that go into detail about hacking, but Masters of Deception is an interesting book about a few hacker people. The Cuckoo's Egg is supposed to be an interesting read too, but not exactly about hacking.

The Art of War tends to be only as good as the commentary that accompanies it, at least that's my take on it. Probably the same for The Prince, I never got through that book because my translation was so darned dry and boring.

I was interested in the Thomas Cleary translation of the Art of War because it had a number of different people, I think all ancient Japanese, supplying commentary after each section.

In order to get the Prince you almost have to read it out loud. As if you are telling it to someone.

There are some very good security people on the internet that can point you toward hte basic info. But there is a lot of trash.

Just throw the Bebop movie in your cart and watch Ed at work...

Those fishies graphics can hack anything!

pretty much yes, know the in's and out's of various networks and yes knowing linux would come in handy as Thrax mentioned. The sterotype of a "hacker" has been through so many changes I don't even know if a hacker knows (s)he is a hacker or not.

I already have ALL the cowboy bebop series, episodes and the movie.

I got a couple of the new MechWarrior Dark Age novels, numbers 1 & 2 added in.
