please help, stubborn trojan![solved]

Hello! I hope you all can help me out, I'm having some problems with (I think) a Trojan and it's making me really aggravated. I'll try to give as much backstory information as I can before I post the log, because it might help. Last night I discovered I'd aquired a program called SpywareQuake and that my IE start page was sysprotectionpage.net. McAfee also found a trojan called "Downloader-AV" and cleaned it. From googling, I've eliminated both SpywareQuake and the IE start page issue since then, but I have a third problem that I can't seem to solve. I hope you can help!

McAfee keeps detecting trojans popping up in my Temporary Internet Files, and I can't delete them from the program itself (I have to actually go in and delete). It says that they are QLowZones-15 and while they have a lot of different file names, they're seriously annoying. I know there must be another program on my PC that's starting them but nothing can really find it. My computer is also still booting up extremely slow (I just restored my hard drive yesterday after hard drive failure and there's really nothing on here) and programs are opening slowly as well.

Here is my log! I also did a scan with Panda ActiveScan and can post the log for that if necessary. Thank you!

hi kaeda, before we can begin I noticed your running HJT from a temp folder..this is very dangerous as no backups from *fixed lines* are made unless its in a permanent folder so to fix this please do the following:
The easiest way to accomplish this is to delete any copies of HijackThis.zip you have saved and then please follow the steps outlined below

Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here:

    HijackThis_sfx download

    Save HijackThis_sfx to your desktop.

Double-click the file then click the Unzip button. Then close the Self-Extractor window.

Using My Computer/Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe to run it. If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessable, right click HijackThis.exe and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).

Please run the extracted HijackThis.exe from now on. Delete any copies of HijackThis.zip that you have saved.

Open HijackThis and click Do a system scan and save a log file. Copy the entire contents of that log and post it here;)

Argh, I am getting a new problem, one that is slightly worrisome. Every once in awhile the virus (I assume) is bringing up a DOS window and an alert pops up which reads:

    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\WIN9TM~.EXE
the NVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
    CS:e0e5 IP:e922 OP:f0 f0 f0 f0 f0 choose close to terminate program

It wasn't doing this before but when I started up my computer about 30 minutes ago it did it the first time, and just now the second. Hope this is helpful.

malware just as I thought ok kaeda please do the following boot into safe mode (tap f8 couple times upon startup and select safe mode) once in safe mode please find and delete this file-->C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjtp32.dll then reboot back into normal mode and post a new HJT log please:wink:
  • edited July 2006
Okay in Safe Mode I attempted to delete and I got this error:

    Cannot delete: Access is denied
Make sure that the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not in use

So instead I moved the file into a quarantine folder and changed the extension from .dll to .ddd. Even after quarantining it I was unable to delete, so if there's any way I can get around that problem, that'd be great.

    Here is my updated log:

good job, now please fix this line in HJT -->O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\IMJP81K.DLL reboot and then Please run the BitDefender online scan from here; http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
You will need to allow an active x install for the scan to run.
Leave the scanning options at default and press "click here to scan"
When finished scanning, click on "click here to export the scan report"
Save it to your desktop, at "file name" type in "bdscan" then click save.
Please attach the bdscan.html file to your next post along with a new hijackthis log.

Okay deleted and scanned, but when I tried to attach the html file to this post, it wouldn't upload, I think because it wasn't one of the valid formats. I zipped it to make it work, I hope that's okay. I suppose I can always copy and paste it in if all else fails.

I also feel like I should mention that, while BitDefender was scanning, McAfee located a trojan and cleaned it. I got distracted and forgot to write down the name of the trojan before it got cleaned, but I can probably go back and find out, if it's really important. It was a new one that I hadn't seen before, not one of the QLowZones-15 that were popping up before.

    Here's my new HjT log:

good job, the zip file went thru fine..as I can see those infected files are in the system restore folder which we can take care of at the end for the final cleaning/prevention stage and that being said I looked over your log it seems clean anything else seem wrong or can I go on w/ the cleanup/preventation stage?
  • edited July 2006
Nothing else seems wrong, I think my computer's running pretty smoothly. I guess we can begin cleanup now.

Thank you so much for helping me out!

your welcome! but before I do the final prevention speech..lets do the cleaning of temp files and junk you don't need on your PC (where some malware can actually be stored) to do this please follow these instructions-->
    Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
    Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Cookies
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • Cleanup! All Users
    Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click Yes.

Note: For 98 and ME users
Under Options put a check next to the following
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Cookies
    • Cleanup! All Users
    Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click Yes. then post back on how that went and i'll do the prevention part:thumbsup:

Okay I ran CleanUp! and it cleared off a couple hundred MB of space. Everything seems to be still running smoothly, so I'm ready for prevention.

great! you can keep that utility if you like i personally recommend as its MUCH faster than windows disk cleanup in my opinion..but now for the prevention stages-->We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
      * Click
    Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
    * CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
      1. Turn off System Restore.
        On the Desktop, right-click
      My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
      2. Restart your computer.

      3. Turn ON System Restore.
        On the Desktop, right-click
      My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
      • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
      • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
      • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use: and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use): It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

*note* heres some other useful "goodies" to help protect your system...>
      Prevention Programs:
      • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
      • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
      • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
      • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
      • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
      Other necessary Programs:
      • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
      • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Kerio and ZoneLabs.
      • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Thank you! I'd downloaded most of those programs in my attempt to rid my computer of these trojans, and I've always used firefox, but it's a really good reference and it's nice to know that my computer should be pretty safe now.

One thing I've noticed recently that I just want to check out is that my internet is going really slow. I thought it was our router, but the other computers are loading fine. On mine, pages are taking a lot longer to load than usual and sometimes I'm getting "page not found" errors, and then when I refresh they're fine. It's still possible that it's our router, I guess, but I'm concerned that there's still something on my harddrive that's slowing it down. I was also wondering if maybe the firewall software I installed (ZoneAlarm) would slow the internet down? Also, ZoneAlarm has blocked about 4000 intrusions since I downloaded it. A lot of those were from the trojans before, I assume, but it's still steadily climbing. Is that normal?

I don't mean to be nitpicky, I just want to make sure that everything's clean so I don't have to come back here in two months and bother you guys again.

Thank you so much (again) for all of your help!

hmm it could be the router.. i just had to replace ours few days ago because it was slowing our connection down and couldn't hold a connection for more then a few hours at a time and my new router fixed the problem right up, however, it may not be that..lets try a few things first go to start>run>type in "cmd" (w/out quotes of course) a black box will come up>type in "ipconfig /flushdns (theres 1 space between ipconfig and /) then reboot.. next run a defrag on your hard drive and after all that lemme know how it goes:)

Okay after clearing everything out it seems to be moving at the normal speed again. I think that did it!
