beginners woes

My wife brought home a 4 year old Dell pentium 4 running windows xp pro. I hooked it up and it starts fine. But the only thing that comes on the screen is a sign in box for windows. We tried a few user names and passwords but they were all rejected. This pc came from where she works there were around 70 of them being exchanged for new pc's. They were used for inventory and such and most never were on the internet. Some of them were stored for a year or so so I doubt if we could find the person who used this particular pc. They did erase all the info they had on the pc's. But not being familar with xp (I have only used vista) I have no clue what to do. Is there a way I can go around this sign in box or maybe find the administrator and make a new sign in name and password? Thanks for any help. Steve aka skilit123

Your best bet (for a variety of reasons) is to just upgrade to Windows 7. It will be like a brand new computer.

How much RAM is in the computer? You may want to upgrade that as well. With a few small tweaks, this computer will be good as new.

I heavily agree with prime on this one. Just buy Windows 7 and install.

If that's not anywhere in the budget, try this: http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/. Just used it yesterday, actually.

And here's some instructions for using it: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/wi...windows/?p=639

since I cannot get beyond that sign in box I have no clue how much ram is left on this pc. Because this pc was just used for work related stuff and was all deleted I don't have to worry about loosing any files etc. Looks like the cheapest way to recover or change password is getting sputmau's power suite 2009 for about 50 bucks. Thanks so much for your help. Great site! I am sure I will be back to bug you again! Everyone has different talents. I make a living selling my paintings and playing a little music, for me to understand tech. stuff is like trying to mix water with oil. lol

Actually, the cheapest way to reset the password is free: http://icrontic.com/articles/windows...sword_recovery

You may want to try konboot to bypass the password and then set up a new administrator account once you're logged in. You can read my write up on it at http://computerdoctor-mitchel.blogsp...rd-bypass.html along with a link to their website.
