Lightbulb S-M Recommended Utilities

Announcing:

A new project for the Short-Media members!

I have the okie-dokie to compile a list of our membership's favorite utility programs. Since this will be a major undertaking, it will take several weeks for me to put it all together. To make it work, and not be just a list of my personal favorites, I am going to need all of you to help.

Why? Because the final list of S-M Recommended Utilities will be based entirely on the input I get from YOU!

Here's how it will work:

Each week I will post to the General Software Forum a new category. All you need do is vote in the poll - it's that easy.

To make the final article more interesting, any comments you wish to enter (do this is in the Utilities Poll thread) are quite welcome. Knowing "why" you made your choice will add a lot to the end result. Additionally, any remarks concerning software you wouldn't use under any conditions should certainly be of interest to your fellow S-M members.

The category will be changed on a weekly basis, and the previous week's category will be closed. I plan to cover everything from AV software, to benchmarks, to system maintenance utilities.

So head on over to the General Software Forum and look for the thread "Utility Poll"!

Sorry this is off-topic but I thought it was kinda funny. I noticed alot of people using the abbreviation S-M for the site. Everytime I see it I read it as S&M.
This topic seemed especially funny. S&M Recommended Utilities.

FlashFXP - Excellent FTP/FXP program.
AdAware - Spyware sucks, 'nuff said.
WinISO or IsoBuster - For working with CD images.
WinHex - No tweaker's computer is complete without the almighty hex editor.
HyperSnap-DX - The best screenshot prog ever made, end of story.
Some kind of popup blocker, I use a homemade one. Zone Alarm Pro has one built in. There are a lot of other ones, too.
WinRar - RAR is better than zip, and WinRar does zip, too.
Araxis Merge - Great for comparing source code.

Guess that's all for now. I tried to keep it to 'utilities only' but some fall outside that category a bit.

Smile Patience!

Go to the General Software forum and check out this thread:

http://www.short-media.com/forum/sho...=&threadid=702

What we're hoping to do is compile a comprehensive list of members favorite utilities. We're doing three categories a week until we cover all the important subjects - don't worry, the programs mentioned in the past few messages will get their chance!

Yeah, my favorites are Whips v3.6, Chains v2.0c (eliminates the bugs in v2.0b), and Vinyl Masks - get a shareware version.

Thrax:

PeerGuardian is essentially an IP filter, which is certainly useful (Though not foolproof). A lot of software firewalls already include this capability and there are lists of IP ranges floating around the Internet that can be downloaded and plugged right into the firewall - At least in the case of Sygate's firewall. So you get the added capabilities of the firewall, plus IP range blocking.

Some P2P programs, such as eMule and cDonkey have built in IP filters that block ranges of IPs. Potentially malicious clients that try to communicate from these IPs are instantly dropped with no response.
